Everyone complains about PS2s DVD capabilities, but what\'s wrong with it? Why does everyone descrobe the DVD player as "second rate"?
-
I\'m not sure. I have had only one problem with it (and it was probably my fault), when I fast forwarded through more than 1/3rd of a cd.... but it works fine now, just had to clean the disk after that....
I guess some people want more features? multi-speed search? I dunno, the quality seems fine for me on my TV with DD5.1. I wouldn\'t worry about what others think, if you like the playback, it\'s all good.

People say that it is when you put it side by side a top of the range DVD,but what do they expect.
I think people should just be happy with what they have,i mean the ps2 is the same price as the ps1,but for the 300 tou get 128 bit games machine a ps1 and a DVD player, why carnt people see that they got a good something good.

If you have a critical eye and are into this stuff, there is no contest between a stand-alone player and the ps2. A $200 Toshiba, Panasonic, or Pioneer is a much better buy if you wanted to just watch DVDs on it.
Sony has experience in making electronics yes, but as said before; the PS2 is a gaming machine first, and a dvd player second. Nothing wrong with that, unless of course you want to say the ps2\'s dvd playback quality is equal to a $500+ player...

i think alot of people are jealous or mad, because they bought a stand alone dvd player prior to release of the PS2 so they make up nonsense to justify their decision.

Iv\'e allways looked at the PS2\'s DVD playback as an extra. Nothing more nothing less. and in all honesty i think
that its rather good.

The DVD playback funktion of the PS2 is SUPERB !!!
I didn´t have ANY problem with it... and I´m watching 2-3 Movies a week !
It is a perfect entertainmentcenter to do both - play games AND watch DVDs...
-
The DVD playback itself works fine... Its just some of the whistle and bells that you miss out on from buying a good quality DVD player..
But your also going to spend the money for a good DVD player, Im talking at least $500...
There is one option I wish the Sony DVD player had and that would be progressive scan output.. Now that would put it on top for me. But because it does not, I see myself buying a new DVD player here shortly...

Kirath hit the nail on the head for me. Until they can make that thing spit out a progressive scan movie, it\'s useless as a dvd player for me. The interface is lame and I already have a DVD player so why bother.
If the VGA adapter, which hopefully will come one day, will spit out a Progressive scan movie, then I am in like flin.
The only reason I even have SVideo anymore is for the PS2. Everything else I have is 1080i or 720p.
I have put a dvd in PS2 once before and the picture seemed fine. Only thing annoying was the parental lock and the interface. If I didn\'t already have a DVD player I could probably put up with that though. And I will if they ever get me my VGA Adapter!!!
