Linux for the PlayStation2:It\'s Official
Posted by CmdrTaco on Thursday April 26, @09:25AM
from the do-you-speak-japanese? dept.
Oliver writes "Sony officially announced their port of Linux to the PlayStaion2 game console. In the press release they mention that they were moved by demand the community petition (see this story) demonstrated with over 6000 signers. The PS2 Linux Kit page is currently only in Japanese and there\'s not much info thre yet other than some pictures. But according to it, a Beta version is going to be sold to 1000 members of the community in June for about $200. The Kit is going to consist of an external HDD/Ethernet unit connected to the PCMCIA slot, found on early Japanese PS2 models, a VGA adapterplus USB Mouse and Keyboard. Kits for oversee models are supposedly in planning. The kit will include a complete Linux/X11 environment with all sources, technical hardware manuals for the EE, GS and vectorunits plus a low-level API and Mesa drivers for graphics. " Won\'t work for us unfortunate american PS2 junkies. But its a sweet step.

People port linux over to everything they possibly can... Andything that could possibly run LINUX some geek out there has found a way to do it....
So its kinda a PC in sorts but does not have the same functionality....

I carnt see this catching on,i dont know what it is about it,i bet it doesnt get released in the uk.

Sounds nice.
It shouldn´t take long to have Freeware games "or demos" after the release of linux for ps2... *Sweet* :)

This is so great, LINUX on the PS2!!
I wounder if a linux based game would run on the PS2?
-
Linux will open the gateway to all things bright and beautiful to the ps2. It will also bring problems with hackers taking advantage of it as well though! The ps2 was always heading for the PC direction. It is a multimedia system afterall! No surprise there!
-
Lol N-Player, I think I speak for all here if I say "leave us all alone and take your hate with you". I\'m not particularly out to get you or anything, you just make it so easy these days. :)

Samwise! Give him a break, he had a hard childhood.

PS2 is no more a PC then a DC, or Xbox is.
DC has Windows CE, Linux, Keyboard, mouse, browser, internet
Xbox has Windows 2000 ligh version, internet (dont know if it has support for kb or mouse!)
PS2 has, Linux, Keyboard, mouse, printer, browser, internet, DVD, ect.

This is highly amusing for a few reasons. One, like Samwise mentioned, the PS2 is more a "PC" now then any console currently. I personally could care less, but this should end the arguments brought up by Nplayer and other Xbox nay-sayers claiming that the Xbox is nothing but a scaled down home computer.
As for this being the "killer app" that will sell. I truly doubt it. So far there is not one known compelling reason to purchase this whole thing.
Sure, you can program games and it runs on Linux. Big whoopie doo. If I remember correctly, you could do that with the now-deceased Indreama? Not too original, on Sony\'s part. Not to mention, who is actually goin\' to take advantage of this? I mean, with the Indreama it would of been rather simple, as development for the system was straight forward. It isn\'t quite the same with the PS2. Everyone knows that development for the PS2 is a *****. Either way--that is in Japan only.
So what reason is there for us Americans (or any other country, \'cept Japan) to want it? Sony hasn\'t given us one reason yet .

What are you guys talking about, this would be awsome. If it comes here I\'m getting it. But then again I plan on designing/programming games. Think about it though, we\'re the gaming community. If we don\'t grow up to make games who is. I really appreciate what they are doing. While indrema TRIED to do it first, with SONY it actually has a chance of catching on some what. Think about what this will do for the industry, instead of just being considered something that kids do that\'s lazy it\'ll become a hobby and hopefully even an artform in the eyes of the mainstream. The industry will get some respect especialy cause games are so hard to make and the industry will evolve and inovate faster. PLEASE SONY, BRING IT HERE!

Developers have done nothing but constantly complain about PS2 development problems. Why would it be any eaiser for someone who is just a hobbiyst to make PS2 demos? While it is a good idea, it has already been tried by Sony once--the Net Yaroze.

It will be easier cause with that kit you can never reach the limit of the console.Little games could be made but I guess this one is more for other applications like browsers, media players etc...

I think the real online addon will sell really well..
Maybe not this kit. (the programming kit)
As it said in the article. Only 4500 has signed up for it.
The real kit (online) will be cheaper (i hope) and prob. sell well..
Everyone is lookingforward to PS2 broadband.
And sony is not stupid, Im confident they will sell onlinekit at a low price.
Maybe they do like SEGA. You sign up on a contract and the the kit for "free"!

The PS2 is looking very good these days. You know what Linux means? WINE!!!!!! An emulator that Emulates some Linux oppcodes to make Windows stuff run for Linux!!! Woot!!!
-
When does the Playstation2 easy bake oven come out?
-
I dont see how this is at all turning your PS2 into a PC.
It was made strictly for "Home-development purposes", I think its awesome that sony made a home development kit.
Has anyone else done this?
This is as close to Indrema as possible.
PS2 games now use linux as its developing base.

umm,i think you\'re just exagerating this a bit doood,it is hard to develop for PS2,but that was majorily in the beginning, things have evolved since then, lets not bring this lame "ps2 has constant development problems" topic over and over because it is not like that as much as before. if it was sooooo hard, there would be quite a bit less developers as there are nowdays,it\'s a dated phrase anymore. i\'m not saying some don\'t have problems but it\'s not as hard as you are describing it to be. i think the Linux dev kit is a cool idea, just because you do not like the idea doesn\'t mean it won\'t catch on. for the price offered and the features,it sounds good and i\'m not into much technical aspects of things, yet it interests me,so that says something for an gameplayer at heart in my book.

Hehe, do I have to point out the irony in this? :D

Uhm?
What is the point in runnin\' a emulator of another OS ? I mean, if you want to use Windows , use Windows. Why do emulation?
I don\'t understand it. It is just like VirtualPC, I don\'t quite understand why someone would buy a computer and another OS--just to buy / download /compile a program that emulates the OS they didn\'t buy.
If you think you are goin\' to need Windows based programs--then buy Windows.
Geeze.
:)

Yeah but it opens the door for other Linux based emus to be run on PS2 hardware. MAME, ZSNES and a poop load more. Hell in theory what would stop you from downloading the Linux version of Q3 or UT and cranking it up on the PS2. I`m sure there would be technical reasons why you probably couldn`t but you could try.

You know something I just thought about. Linux is open source right. Then theoredically if they got Sony to make the PS2 open source for all the Linux programmers couldn\'t they do what the did with the DC. Not saying it\'s right but make the ever elusive boot disc that works off of the DVD loading program. or the already mentioned emulation of stuff like ZSnes or others. But when you think about it the DC has been hacked to death. They\'ve found basically every possible use for it. and they\'re still searching for more. Image what they could do with the PS2 even though I\'ll just play games on it. I already have a snes and love it to death:D
