check it out, the official ps2 hardrive , keybaord, mouse, ethernet adapter and all the good stuff has been revealed. Yes the hd will be running on a linux based OS :D
http://www.psera.com/index.cgi?type=News;action=Display;id=000218
For some reason the direct link doesnt work so just look at the right hand side of the page and click on the PS2 official addon link. Yup nobody has this info yet, those guys at psera.com rock.
-
Here you go:
-
yah thats the package, it will retail for 250 dollars. go to the link to get more info.
-
250? Damn, that\'s gonna sell real well. At least they are going to have a separate ethernet adapter so I don\'t have to buy the HDD. Also, what is the Linux software for? I thought Sony was using PlanetWeb for the browser.
-
$200-$250!!!!! whoa, they are going to have to do a lot better than that if they want to be able to have it go mainstream. I don\'t know of to many people that will shell out that kind of $$$$ for it, as mentioned in previous posts by others. Sony better make it sweet and cheap if they want a large user base.
-
read the above. 250 dollars is the proposed retail price for the PACKAGE. for 250 dollars u get everything, the 40 gig hdd, the ethernet adapter, the keyboard, mouse, vga adaper, the works. Thats a damn good deal considering most 40 gig hd\'s retail for near 200 bucks alone. If you dont want to shell out that much then u can buy individual parts.
-
$250? Ha! While that may be a good deal, it is still goin\' to be a ***** to sell to the average consumer. You know, the one who doesn\'t realize how much a 40gig HD costs already.
Not to mention, they are goin\' to need some real compelling reasons to buy all this stuff.
Ah, hopefully Sony will make some huge grand announcement concerning the HDD / Ethernet / combo come E3.
And gee.. Linux, who would of guessed?
;)

add-ons=failures
add-ons that cost over $200=major failures
I\'m just ginving you guys a history update...
-
I know that the package price/for what you get is good but in the past add-ons that have been this expensive have not survived. I know that you can get a 40GB HD 160-170 at non video game stores (where they rip you off). Anyway didn\'t mean to sound as if Sony was ripping people off. It\'s just getting more expensive than upgrading my computer.
-
$200 for a 40gig HDD? Yeah right! You can get an 80gig for ~$200. The cheapest 5400rpm 40gig on pricewatch is $93 and I doubt the PS2 HDD is a 7200rpm. If you would pay that much for something that won\'t even be used that much then you\'re crazy!
40gig hdd-$93
Mouse-$10
KB-$10
Ethernet Adapter-$10
PS2 package=rip off

They could have used BeIA instead of Linux, since their already using that in their eVilla line of computers. And that OS is designed for internet appliences.
-
I thought I would never say this, but damnit Sony has lost their damn minds. Thats almost as much as the system, and I know I won\'t be buying that bundle. Sony might as well not even sell it, the "average" consumer won\'t buy it. And every game won\'t take advantage of it as everyone won\'t have certain componets (HD) that developers can use to enhance games. I know its a sad day when I\'m looking to buy an X-Box.
-
I didn\'t use pricewatch in my price comparison because some of those retailers sell below cost or sell refurb Items. (although I have never had any problems with any retailers form there yet.)
-
You know what???
All you all, including psera are completely off base. This is NOT the "online" ps2 package .
This is a Linux programming package......A TOTALLY different animal!!!
-
Actually, that makes more sense (the LINUX programming package).
Hopefully, Sony will clear the confusion up soon. Because, if it is the ONLINE package--there is no way it can be succesful, but if it is the Linux package, then it doesn\'t really matter to the general consumer at all.
-
the package is not the online package and psera never said it was , they simply put up info and pics of the add-ons that will be available for the ps2.
-
Actually, the HDD on pricewatch all have a 3 year manufacturers warranty so they aren\'t refurbished. A retail 40gig HDD is only around $130 for a 7200rpm, the 5400rpm are even cheaper.
Even if that is a Linux programming package, you can still get a good idea of how much it is going to cost for the online package. If they charge that much for this package I\'d guess the online package would be ~$150 or more which is still too much. Like I already said, since they will be selling a separate ethernet adapter I will just get that and hopefully it won\'t be super expensive like the DC ethernet adapter.

The HDD looks cool.

I second that.

The HDD is the jap machine hdd where it sits by the ps2\'s side. Ours in the UK slot into the back so we can\'t see it! When I had my jap machine people said the HDD would be ugly but now everyone say\'s it\'s cool!
-
This is a pic of the 1000 unit japanese release of the linux dev kit. I don\'t know what the final cost of a simmilar (non dev) package would be, but I would venture the 120-200 dollar US range.
-
most deals of this kind would fail. why pay $250 for all that just as an add on to an existing machine. Sony better make a sweet deal. But then again...it does have the backing of Final Fantasy 10 and many other highly anticipated games
[edit] helps if i read the whole thread before replying :)
-
I wonder if sony are planning to charge extortionate prices to us UK guys again.
Lets do a sony maths lesson.....
US Price Aprrox $250(£172)
Probably UK Price £250($362)
lets hope they charge us properly this time around

Yes...""See the cheapest PS2 dev-kit you cannot use...""
SCEI has announced a Linux-based programming environment for would-be game makers. Going by the name of "PlayStation 2 Linux Kit Beta Version," the product is set for release in June for 25000YEN, much less than the average first-party Playstation 2 development kit.
This kit comes with just about everything the hardcore gamer has been asking Sony for ever since the PS2 launched:
Installation Disk
External 40GB HDD
VGA Monitor Adaptor (about time!)
USB 106-key Keyboard & USB scroll-wheel Mouse
Note that the kit comes with an external HDD, meaning it is probably incompatible with both the SCPH-30000 and the US Playstation 2 models...

...are you all joking? isn\'t it ? :) This is NOT the "online" ps2 package !
-
now everyone thank BizoEE for squashing the drama, everyone jumps to conclusions wayy to fat, of course this wasnt the online kit, i mean its an external modem, and the U.S. has the expansion bay for INTERAL modems, get the picture, though it would be nivce to recieve a similar looking online kit, with a cheaper price of course :)
