Sony\'s Surprise E3 Titles?
Sony has big plans for the show, but its lips have been sealed. We\'ve unearthed some new info.
April 26, 2001
On the company\'s official Website for this May\'s Electronic Entertainment Expo, Sony Computer Entertainment America listed some of the games that will be on display at its booth. The games listed include Konami\'s Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Squaresoft\'s Final Fantasy X and Sony\'s own Extermination, plus two titles that haven\'t yet been announced for release in North America -- SOCOM and Drakan.
Drakan is a 3D action-adventure game that\'s the PlayStation 2 sequel to the PC game of the same name. It has yet to be officially announced by SCEA for release in North America, but it has been on SCEE\'s (Sony Computer Entertainment Europe) table since April of last year. The mention of Drakan by SCEA doesn\'t necessarily mean that it\'s coming Stateside, as SCEE always has a presence at E3, but if it\'s one of the games that SCEA is highlighting, one would think that its release would seem likely.
The other new game on the list, SOCOM, is a bit of a mystery. This is a game that we have never heard of ever before and the only thing the name reminded us of was that SOCOM is the name of the gun used by Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid. However, through further research, we discovered that SOCOM is also the name of one of nine of the unified combat commands of the United States -- the Special Operations Command.
This unit was activated in 1997 to provide command, control and training for all special ops forces in the US and it currently has in the area of 47,000 active, National Guard and reserve forces. Its components include U.S. Army Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg, NC, the Air Force Special Operations Command, Hurlburt Field, FL, the Naval Special Warfare Command, Coronado, CA, and the Joint Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg.
We don\'t know if the game has something to do with either the gun used by Solid Snake or the Special Operations Command (SOCOM), but the idea of a game based on this elite combat force could definitely be enticing. Sony Computer Entertainment America was unable to be reached today for comment.

I\'ve seen shots of Drakan in Next Gen mafazine for the PS2 and it was looking pretty cool
In the interview Surreal talked about using procedural texturing techniques and other little things they are doing to take advantage of the PS2 hardware.
I\'ve been waiting to see a playable version of Drakan for 9 months now and figured it would be at E3. Now we know for sure and its a PS2 exclusive.
Can\'t wait
I have no clue about SOCOM either
-
The SOCOM game may surprise, I cannot wait til more information is released on this game.
-
Drakan can\'t be a PS2 exclusive coz it was first released on the PC like 2 years ago
Unless of course, this is a completely new Drakan game and it just has the same name
-
I believe it\'s a new Drakan game. I\'m looking foward to it, but this doesn\'t count as a surprise really. I was unaware that Drakan wasn\'t even planned for the US, I just assumed it was. As for SOCOM, I need more info to decide if this is a good suprise, or a bad one...

I just want info on Naughty Dog\'s new game.
-
Yo, Naughty Dog are THE 3D-experts

How so? They did 3D on only one platform so far, and one franchise to boot. I don\'t think thats enough to call them experts...

SOCOM, sounds interesting. As interesting as watching paint dry. Big deal a new game, no ones heard of it. Its just hype. It should be treated with the same new ness as any other game. Ill start to generate a vague interest once the first shots are released, I mean we don\'t even know what genre of game this is yet! ;)
-
actually great news for all us! I hope new peripherics will be unveiled and the game online advances.
-
For 3d experts I would have to say and I\'m sure alot of you will agree they are Carmack and Sweeny.
-
i dont know what socom is either hope its good. Will they be showing Headhunter, ive seen pics of it by amuze, it looks really cool, has anyone got any info on it???
-
haha. Naughty Dog "3-D experts"?
I love the Crash series, but it doesn\'t get them the title of "3-D experts".

I\'m looking forward to hearing more about Sony\'s July survival horror outting of Extermination. All I\'ve seen thus far is a screen shot & a blurb in the May Official US Playstation Magazine:
Sony\'s new survival horror game has finally been given a release date 00 be prepared for action in July. We recently got some hands-on time with the game and were immediately blown away by its graphics. Some of the environments and effects are simply stunning, and there are some gigantic creatures to be found in the game. The gameplay seems a tad simplified at times, but overall it\'s pretty cool. We\'ll deliver more details and screens for Extermination next month.
BTW, if I\'m going to make references to this mag as I pass on articles/blurbs...do the members here refer to this mag in any shorter variation that that wordy title???

I\'ve seen footage of Extermination, it will be good, prehaps even great. :)
Actually you can\'t predict from footage but it does certainly look good.
