That\'s right. Bill Gates has been surpassed by Sam Robson Walton, the chairman of Wal-Mart.
Since most of us all use that great operating system Windows (cough, sorry bug caught in my throat), I thought some of you would find it interesting to know Mr. Bill Gates is no longer the richest man in the world. He has been surpassed by Sam Robson Walton, the chairman of the Wal-Mart . Looks like Bill may have to cut back on his supply of oreo cookies. Here\'s a snippet:
Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates has been ousted as the world\'s richest man by Sam Robson Walton, the chairman of the Wal-Mart retail empire and eldest son of its founder, a newspaper reported Saturday.
Early editions of The Sunday Times newspaper, which compiles an annual list of the richest people in the world, said Gates had lost pole position to Walton after the worldwide plunge in the value of high-technology stocks over the past year. For three years Gates beat all-comers with a fortune that rose to $76.50 billion in 2000, but the value of his holdings has fallen to $54 billion, the newspaper said.

-

That guy from Oracle or Sun (I forget) has been richer. This is a stupid thread for the losers who obsessivly hate Gates to gather. Get a life....

I think you would really stop caring after about 1billion or so, but hey, that is just me :)
But, I thought the Walton fortune was divided amongst three heirs, and not one. therefore making the family fortune the strongest, but not singulary strongest.
And once tech stcoks heat up again, Oracle and MS are back at the top.

I would stop carring after 1 million dollars. :)
And Ethugg, it was not meant to be a place for Gates-haters to come. It was just meant to be something that I thought everyone would like to know. I\'ll edit my original post so it doesn\'t sound so anti-gates.

THe fortune was divided up but his oldest son controls walmart operations so I guess the value of the company is placed in his pocket..
I think "The Daily Show" said it best. This just goes to show you that, although selling software may be profitable, it is not nearly as profitable as selling Billy the Big-mouth Bass. :D

Like AlteredBeast and Gohan already said, the fortune is divided among 5 family members each being worth 17billion. Go to Forbes (http://www.forbes.com/2001/04/26/0426gates.html) to read the article.

The feckless folks on Fleet Street calculate that Walton is worth $65.2 billion (45.3 billion pounds), but they\'re off by a whopping $48 billion. A quick peek at the superstore\'s proxy reveals that the 1.7 billion Wal-Mart shares owned collectively by founder Sam Walton\'s widow and their four children are in fact split evenly amongst the five of them. With a total value of nearly $87 billion, that leaves them each only $17 billion.
Haha! Thanks for the link inteq. Goes to show you shouldn\'t believe everything you read. People could argue on this subject all week, but the bottom line is that the Sunday Times should have been more clear in explaining how the family\'s wealth was divided. Especially with the headline "Gates Ousted as World\'s Wealthiest Man."
