Title: To all the Red Faction nitpickers out there:
Post by: Solid Snake 88 on April 27, 2001, 03:43:10 PM
While Red Fation may have some slowdown, it is still a great innovation. The Geo-Mod engine is incredible, and from what I hear the story line is great too.
Even if Red Faction itself is not the revolution we were expecting it is a step in the right direction. Now we just have to wait for some other(preferably more talented) developers to take the reigns and continue from where Red Faction left off.

Well Snake, I hope someone will come along and do the same or better.  I can\'t wait to get.......:D

Can someone please tell me what the Geo-Mod engine is?

The Geo-Mod engine is a brand new revolutionary engine designed by Volition. It stands for Geometric(i think) Modificiation. With the power of the Geo-Mod engine you can completely manipulate your surroundings, i.e. you can blow a hole in any wall, ceiling, floor you want.

Unfortunetly since the engine is so advanced and takes up so much CPU power they(Volition) were only able to get the framerate up to 30fps. Although I figure later on when developers get a better hang of the PS2\'s unique architecture they will be able to produce the same effects at a higher framerate.

BTW welcome to the forums. Have fun :)

i\'m pretty sure that geo mod will be used in many games that will come out soon....

it is a very good game and the slow downs are bearable... deal with it!

I\'ll give you the simplest and clearest explanation possible: you can blow up ANYTHING. Walls, the groud, ect ect.

Red Faction\'s idea will surely be copied since it\'s a great idea. Although it takes up a lot of the systems power, it\'s still kind of worth it in the long run. Run Like Hell is using this too I think so the rip offs have already started. Maybe even the major stuff like Quake and Perfect Dark games will use this magnificant feature.

*Me drools over the thought of After Dark having this kind of feature*

Oh yeah, slow-down doesn\'t mean a thing. Goldeneye has horrible slow-down but it still took the gaming industry by storm, got perfect reviews from everyone, and went on to sell over 7 million copies. As long as the game is good then anything else doesn\'t matter. If Red Faction has great gameplay then it will be a great game regardless of it\'s graphical capabilities.

Slowdown isn\'t as bad as the Summoner from Volition,  but I\'m tired of it.

If we buy this game with slowdown In the future THQ will just say release it the people will buy the game anyways

Hopefully it will get worked out. I will wait for reviews by those who do buy it before I buy it

I didn\'t realize that so many people wanted Red Faction in the first place.  Nothing I read about the game impressed me at all.  And the screenshots didn\'t make matters any better.  I\'m sure some developers will make something ten times better.

I played it for a few hours today. :)  I love the geo-mod engine.  I was trying to get to the bottom of one of those elevator shafts on the first level, but I was unsuccessful. :(  Oh well, I\'ll try again later. :)  This game is very addictive.  Now we just need a game that has more emphasis on the multiplayer with the geo-mod engine.  That would be cool. :)

this game is gonna rock, who cares if it has some slowdown, it is a step in the right direction for more realistic games, and better games

I think great graphic is not soooo important. Better bad graphic than big slowdowns. (A game with awesome graphics and 60 fps each time, that would be perfect)

i dont mind the slowdown at all, and im sure when they release it the slwodown will be gone, or really minimized, i read in a updated review at IGN that voition sent them a full copy of the game, and it ran at a locked down 30 fps, i know IGN doesn\'t lie about ish like that, the only reason everyone says its to slow is because of thier expectaions are 2 high, i know im gonna probably get flamed for saying htat cause the PS2 can run the game at 60 fps, thats no excuse, but look at summoner it had way more slowdown, glitches up the yahoo, and everyon still enjoyed it, ddaryl you even beat the game :)

so why are you so demented on the speed having to be 60 fps people? 30 fps is good enough for me, and i just reserved the game yesterday, so im all set to go, the persona t software etc. said is was coming out May 22 or 24 or somethig, is htis true ??? i always though it was coming out the 7 of may or less.

I have to agree. I totaly hate slowdown but if the game is \'locked\' at a certain framerate this feels a lot better.

Just take a look at the back catalouge of PSOne games and there are loads that ran at a constant framerate...
Gran Turismo is a good example of this.. Could you imagine going around a corner at 60FPS just to turn onto
the back straight and the whole thing dips to about 25 FPS.... Yes, it would look like crap but with the game
locked at about 27 FPS it was excelent as you got used
to the framerate after a couple of races.

That\'s so true me and my friends were playing Goldeneye with Rockets and the game slowed to a crawl and we still couldn\'t put it down.  Slowdown can be tolerated if the game play is there.

My opinion...

Well I agree STROKE that I would sooner have the graphics turned down slightly than to have slowdown.

I also agree that having games locked at a FPS is fine. Slowdown and slow games are a different thing. I don\'t mind games running at 30 fps. I do mind games literally getting slower in front of you when the action becomes more rapid.

Some games may be playable with the slowdown, I for one though can\'t see past it but thats me, I don\'t see why us gamers have to "try" and like a game. A game should just be enjoyed, we shouldn\'t need to try and enjoy a game and attempt to see past slowdown if truthly it gets on our nerves.

I understand that people will disagree and feel games can be enjoyed and that they don\'t need to see past slowdown if it exists, but I for one hate it. :)

Remember it IS a DEMO Disc after all and it is not the final product, i mean just look at the improvements between the GT3 demo and final game (just ask The Bouncer ow good the final game is ;) )

Last night I took all my sticky bombs or whatever they are called and dug a huge tunnel

I didn\'t discover anything but it was cool

After I got done  with the Turret I used my remaining bullets and blasted as much of a hole in one section of wall I could. Then I use all my sticky bombs and furthered the hole.

When I was done I had a 50 foot tunnel

It was kinda cool just to do this

in reply to going down the elevator shaft, all you have to do I play the game on easy (so you get more mines) and thrown one at an angle on the wall, blow it up, jump into the hole you just made, and keep throwing them down.......I havent tried this, I just thought of it, tell me if it works.

That sounds almost too cool to be true, ddaryl - if I were you, I would be jumping out of excitement ;)

I don\'t care if the framerate is \'only\' 30fps, as eyes will get used to it, and if it doesn\'t dip from there, it\'s ok.

I\'m far more interested in testing the game out, and have some FUN, like you...

I was able to dig a hole with mines down the side, and it leaves you with a big enough crack to jump down the rest of the shaft but you still die i was so pissed
