Would this rule if Sony were to release Final Fantasy 10 on the same day the X-Box launches. Just like they did with Final Fantasy 8(Or was it 9), when they released it on the same day of the launch of the Dreamcast. And they could top it off by dropping the price to 200 bucks.
If this were to happen do you guys think it would work?
Releasing Final Fantasy 10, and cutting the price of the PS2 on the same day of the launch of the X-Box, could we smell, a stealing of X-Box customers....
-
I\'ve heard rumors that they were going to try and get FFX out in time for the Xbox launch. A price cut to $250 is very likely as well.
-
Launching FF8 against DC was a big mistake for Square (Sony does NOT own Square) as DC launch was the largest money making and console selling in history. My guess is that the X-Box launch will be bigger than the DCs and launching FFX against it would only harm the sales of the games being over shadowed by around 20 others on the X-Box list. IMO, Square should launch FFX a couple weeks before X-Box.

they will most likely come out with Platinum PS2 games around the time of launch (if any games are eligable)
-
now THAT is a good idea. Just realease the all star program around that date and you can steal some of the thunder.

I really doubt the US or Europe will see FFX this year. MGS2 seems more likely. That would steal a lot of thunder from the Xbox.
-
Either way, one game isn\'t going to be able to steal the spotlight from the Xbox launch--unless MS has a very bad launch lineup, which I don\'t expect.
People will generaly get more excited (as will media) over a new system then a new installment in a series.
-
My guess is that the X-Box launch will be bigger than the DCs
That all depends on what the price will be. I can\'t imagine any company releasing thier first console for over $200 and outdoing the launch of the Dreamcast. It could happen but I think it\'s highly unlikely. Too early to tell.

Didn\'t the PS2 sell more units on its launch day then the DC duid?
-
Sony is planning a 100 USD drop in price at the around X-box\'s release, so it\'ll be down to 200 USD. If they have games going platinum that are popular, and release MSG2 around then, people who have been waiting will have to choose between a box, and a game, or a PS2 and a bunch of games.... It\'s a smart marketing tactic.
-
Guys, I really doubt that MGS2 will be out around the time of the Xbox launch. I\'ve been reading a lot of interviews with Hideo, and he says that it will be a struggle to get the game out sometime this year. However, a Japaneese/Asian launch is almost guanteed since to them, this is the year of the Snake. Who knows how long it will take for them to get the game over here to America/Europe/Aust.
Also, Altered, I was under the impression that the PS2 launch broke all of the DC\'s sales records (Even when you count games and peripherals out and only count units sony still sold about 150 million dollars worth). I give the DC props for putting up a hell of a show, but it just didn\'t have anywhere NEAR the momentum that the PS2 launch did. It just couldn\'t be helped with the hype the PS2 had.
-
Nintendo did the same thing to Sony with Majora\'s Mask.
-
I think it\'s not an ultimate plan. 1 week earlier would be better.

now this i believe is pretty far fetched, was everyone waiting for 7 to 12 hours in line, even longer! just to get a DC.... no, the PS2 sold in 1 month what the DC sold in a year, isnt that right?
the PS2 lauch was the ultimate launch ever period. all over the world for that matter, in japan when the DC was launched it did terrible, when the PS2 released in japan, they went like hot cakes, and does anyone remember that video of the european launch int hat mall? that was the most awesome thing i have ever seen, they had a 20 or bigger foot PS2 model in the center of this arena surrounded by crazed PS2 fans, did the DC had a 20 foot statue of itself? no cause they had a horrible launch, the PS2 was the largest money making console & selling in history :)
-
I said was. and it was. it made 93 million dollars, bigger than Star Wars Episode 1, the former champion. After PS2 came out, then it became the new champion. I said X-Box would be bigger than DC, not PS2, as X-Box has no hype BEHIND it, just word of mouth.

Yes, when DC launched it was the single biggest one day launch of anything in entertainment ever. Episode 1, N64, Titanic and everything else ate its dust as it broke records. It was for awhile the fastest selling console ever too for months after it\'s release. I still don\'t understand why Sega pulled out... @ $99 every report is saying that DC is still flying off shelves.... If only I was a billionaire, I would personally finance Sega to stick with DC, in addition to paying CD/Eidos to finsh Soul Reaver 2.... dreams........
ahem.... on the topic, I don\'t think any single game will keep people interested in XB away from it. The hardcore will be there on launch day just like with PS2, DC, N64 etc. The mainstream, while talking about it, rarely puts down and buys a console on launch day.
-
Sony will probably do something rather than just sit there and allow the X-Box to be launched in peace. I think that the Final Fantasy X idea is a good idea. Although on the other hand why should us PS2 gamers who are waiting for games have to wait longer whilst the release date fits around Microsoft\'s console?
-
i heard that square will launch ffx at the same launch time as gamecube... apparently they think that sony\'s only rival is nintendo... (a hint mabye???)
a 100$ price drop would kill the x box...... especially if it didnt have some AAA titles at launch.............
-
I think it would rockss one week before (drop the console price and launch FFX)

Would that rule

i think it would be a good idea to release ffx a couple days before or after the x-box!!! it would be just like how ff7 crushed N64.

Of course they are flying off the shelves, they\'re only $99. :D I got a Dreamcast when the price dropped and a ton of 2d fighting games for really cheap. It was a no brainer to get one. :)
Sega was losing tons of money on the Dreamcast. That\'s why they pulled out. They are just trying to gain as much money as possible with these last Dreamcasts that are on the shelves. And do you really think it had that much of a chance against the Xbox, NGC, and the PS2? I don\'t think it would have lasted long against all three systems, and I think Sega thought the same thing.

Yeah, hardcore gamers that are really anticipating the Xbox won\'t change their mind because of one or two great games. As long as the Xbox has some great launch titles, it will sell pretty well.
-
Yeah, before the launch would definitely be best, but they should at least do it two weeks before the launch of the xbox. A price drop for the console, then the release of FFX, it would DEFINITELY be throwing a bone to those who have the cash but just aren\'t quite settled in their decision. Sony know they have to do something, and I think that would be an awesome move. As well as that, platinum titles, it would DEFINITELY draw some crowds then..
-
I think you guys overestimate the X-box.
There is....NO hype.
I didn\'t even know much about it until I got onto the net. Right now, I believe the only people who know about it are the hardcore gamers like yourselves :p
The average gamer probably doesn\'t know much about it, and probably aren\'t too interested.
I wouldn\'t be surprised if the X-box flopped..
then again I wouldn\'t be surprised if the X-box *destroyed* the PS2 ( :burn: )
------
It\'s the GameCube that you guys should be worried about.
I believe that sonies best bet would be to attempt and destroy the Gamecube\'s release.
-
They\'ll definitely drop the price by about £100 then bring out plantinum games. No doubt about it. The same thing happened with the ps one when N64 came out.

Not yet anyways. They are going to do this promotional thing with Taco Bell. That will get it way hyped up.
-
Fast food...and a gaming console.
odd combo ;)
well, they\'ll have to really (REALLY) impress some people.
When is the Xbox release date?
-
Restaurants are played out, Sony used Pizza Hut for a big promotion for the Playstation and Crash Bandicoot series.

That perfectly explains why the N64 launch was the largest money making and console selling in history at that time. The N64 was hammered! Dammit it really sucked out! (just using the rolleyes to get the point across).
Sony should exucute that plan about 3 weeks before the Xbox launch so everyone will forget about it and be more interested in PS2. :)
-
You know what happened when this kid who doesn\'t really even play games said when he over heard me talking about the PS2 about 6 months before it released? "thats gonna rock!". Not because of what I was saying but because he knew what playstation was. When the same guy over heard me talking about XBOX recently he said "What the **** is an XBOX?". And this is a mainstream, ambercrombie fitch wearing type. THat definitly demostrates the hype difrence. Just go to IGN.com and check out the number posts in the xbox forum compared to the PS2 forum. Don\'t get me wrong, I think the Xbox will rock in its own right, but right now it doesn\'t look Like it\'s gonna get as much mainstream support.
-
Microsoft has the money to make sure gamers know exactly what an Xbox is before they lauch it. Besides if it doesn\'t work, they\'ll just make it so all the copies of Windows/Word/Explorer open with a graphic page touting the Xbox! [sarcasm]Long live evil monopolies![/sarcasm]
-
i heard they were going to lower the price when gt3 is released
-
I think Sony will launch the HDD and internetgames like counterstrike when the x-box comes out. Several AAA titels and a lot of Money will make the next winter the most interesting ever. Sony, Nintendo and XB against eachother.
-
Easy Sony Gives Microsoft ,3DO to do their launch titles ;).
-
But a question to ponder is how will sony advertise this price drop? There surely will be a couple of months without
any hardware sales as people will wait until the price drop is put in place. They would probably have to announce
it about 2 weeks before it comes into effect via television and other mediums. otherwise people will be pissed.
it\'s a little unnerving to hear that they will drop a staggering $100 or £100 pounds in a single step. Just think
how people will feel if they had just picked one up just outside the pricedrop date.... This has happened before.
Just something to think about...........
-
Nice thinkin Stanzo !
For example: where I live several shops did
have a PS2 price drop already.
It went down from the launch price of DFL 1149.-
to DFL 999.-
That\'s about $ 550 to $475
It came about March this year. When I went into
this shop just to check out some games this price
drop took me by surprise.

If you really want to think about stealing Microsoft\'s thunder, imagine if not only did Sony inititiate a price drop, put out one or two AAA titles within the week of, and swamp the world with a flurry of advertising ... but that also Nintendo had released its system with its own low price and its own AAA launch titles.
With a (so far) little hype to go on, and two gung-ho competitors like Nintendo and Sony, Microsoft could be in a bad way come the holidays.
What\'s more, the younger market will have been taken away almost entirely by Nintendo, while Sony continues to claim the older gamer (something even Nintendo could be interested in now) and you see that along with all the business decisions from the competitors, Microsoft is up against a decreasing marketshare.
As it stands, Microsoft has its work cut out. Anything can change from now til then, though, especially with the official hype set to start at E3.
