PlayStation 2 Linux Sold Out

05.09 10pm EST

This morning Sony began accepting reservations for PS2Linux, the home-brew PlayStation 2 development kit through their online store. According to company representatives, within eight minutes all 2,000 kits were reserved. All associated orders will be filled next month when Sony begins delivering kits to customers in Japan. It\'s currently unknown when more kits will be made available. Unfortunately, there are still no plans to release PS2Linux outside Japan. I wonder why sony still have no plans to release PS2Linux outside Japan.

And it\'s about time!

Planetweb, a leading provider of applications and services for consumer electronic devices, and Ergosoft Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Koei Co. Ltd., have shipped an Internet solution for PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system into stores in Japan today.

Consumers in Japan are now able to enjoy the benefits of Internet browsing and email enabled by this solution. The Japanese version of the Planetweb Web browser is published by Ergosoft and known as the "EGBROWSER" in Japan. EGBROWSER for PlayStation 2 supports multiple USB modems developed for PlayStation 2 and can be purchased as a bundled product with various USB modems.

Users will be able to easily connect their modem to the USB port in their PlayStation 2 and get online within a matter of minutes. In addition, USB printer and USB keyboard are supported as options. This instant Internet connectivity brings a new level of entertainment to the gaming market.

"Planetweb is excited to provide an Internet solution for the PlayStation 2 in Japan," said Ken Soohoo, President and CEO of Planetweb. "The Planetweb browser and libraries will play a pivotal role in expanding the PlayStation 2 experience into the online world."

The Planetweb browser allows for superior display quality on a regular television including real-time grayscale technology with vector fonts for flicker free text that significantly improves readability on television and other display devices.

Ergosoft will also license the TCP/IP network stack library and Internet browser library to game developers and other multimedia application software developers. Ergosoft has obtained an exclusive sales and distribution right of Planetweb PlayStation 2 Internet software and network middleware in Japan, and is the exclusive distributor for the Planetweb PlayStation 2 browser products in the Japanese market.

No, a lot of the cost of the kit is the dev software it runs under.  I think sony would be crazy not to sell it some more... If it sells 2000 in 8 minutes, they can probably easily sell 50000 if they want to.

Dev kit = Developers kit.

It allows you to develop your own games provided you know extensive C and quite a bit of ASM. Not to mention in depth documentation of the PS2 hardware and how to manage it, which I would imagine would at least come with the PS2 developers kit.

I don\'t know if you remember when Sony released the Net Yaroze--which was a Psone developers kit to the general public, but that is what this is basically.

Sam, if I remember correctly, the cost of the Linux PS2 developers kit was around $250 in American dollars, althought the US or UK will never see this item.

I personally don\'t see the point in alot of people buying this beyond novetly (unless you are an actual developer).

It\'s no surprise to me guys.  90% of the world\'s client-server software is written in UNIX for its power and security.  With this in mind, you can see why developers jump on it.

BTW, I imagine that other 10% is Microsoft.

I can\'t see loads of people getting this Linux development kit as the majority of games players wouldn\'t have a clue where to begin.

As for PS2 online capabilities im interested in seeing this launched in Japan too. :)

Ya know, that\'s pretty smart. If sony had released an offical USB modem for the PS2 then only a limited amount of people would enevitably buy it. However, Sony approved a 3rd party USB Modem for the PC WITH PS2 compatability. Now, if you upgrade to a USB modem in the next few years you\'ll not only be able to surf the web on your PC with it.. but you\'ll be able to use it to take your PS2 online as well. Expand the idea a bit:  couple that with an offical PS2 modem, Offical PS2 Ethernet adaptor, and a plethora of PC devices from companies like Logitech and USRobotics who will make their PC devices PS2 compatable.. and I think Sony may not have to worry about lack of users when setting up their online networks. Game developers will undoubtably rest easier knowing that their online games will be marketed towards a much more massive crowd than what was first thought.

It\'s kind of a "Don\'t wanna buy it? Swipe it from your PC." type of deal.
