Yes. I, a young 100% american boy, can speak fluent Russian. My grandmother was a Russian immigrant. When I was a child, she taught me to be bilingual for some reason (She babysat me and only spoke Russian) I\'ve never been to Russia, and I don\'t know any Russians, (besides grandmother) so I only use it to mess with people. I can\'t write is russian. Only speak it.

I can speak very little French and Lakotan (Souix). I\'d like to learn more Lakotan, but there are no native american book stores around here, and all the language courses on the net cost $$.. which I don\'t have.

God... Finnish is such a weird language! I took a Finnish class before. It\'s like gibberish! It\'s just a little bit like Russian... Kahk da ha viz a voot!
-
Mitä sä tarkotat, suomihan on mahtava kieli! Todella miellyttävän kuuloinen & kaunis... Ei lainkaan kuin venäjä. Ha ha! Ette tajua mitä kirjotan! Hiihii!! (paitsi pari tyyppiä, ehkä)
See, finnish does not have any Zs or Ds! It\'s nothing like russian.
-

Well I\'m fluent in Jamaican if that counts as a second language. I did take 2 years of spanish but passed with a D and gave up. Yeah I\'m a quitter:D
-
Hey Hawke, SmallLady, and anyone else,
Is it really common for people in Finland to understand English? I\'ve been wanting to visit Finland for a long time (I guess because of Aki Kaurismäki films) so I\'m curious. I feel like a bonehead when I have to ask people to speak my language, but it really becomes frustrating when there\'s no common language available.
Oh yeah I could communicate in German too, but I wouldn\'t expect as many Finns to be interested in German. Isn\'t Russian more common in Finland than German?
-
Animal Mutha — Finnish is nothing like russian. They\'re not even remotely related (er, not sure though, maybe an insywinsy bit).
(at least without spending a lot of time within a finnish speaking community or group of people).
Translation : Actually, this (finnish) is a very nice language indeed; fluent (when you finally grasp it), versatile and expressive. Unfortunately, the spoken language we use everyday is so different from written finnish, that I don\'t think any foreigner could understand the gibberish everyone normally uses. (at least without spending extensive periods of time within a finnish speaking community)
Coredweller — The younger generations are basically grown up in a bilingual environment here in Finland, thanks to the abundance of english in the media (games are also a powerful way of education in this area; me being a prime example) and TV. Unfortunately, school is a powerful way to suppress any interest young people might have for the language. Plus, I think most of us finns (mainly the older generations) lack any extensive knowledge of the english language, but I\'m sure you\'d get along just fine. Store clerks and such are supposed to know at least some english (though I\'ve seen exceptions and I\'ve had to butt in to help...). If some problems are to come up, you can always holler: "DOES ANYONE SPEAK ENGLISH HERE!?!". Or not.
Even less people speak german, and there are about... err... 4 finns (who for some nutty reason choose to study the language) and the russian immigrants that speak russian here, so that would be the weakest choice available.
I still can\'t understand why swedish is an obligatory subject in our schools, but english isn\'t as highly regarded. It\'s nuts! The school system sucks!
Anyways... Welcome to our beautiful country! :D

I (Speak??) in Rusian! ? ?? I write in Russian too.
that is what i understood from your writing Trog. :D
When i was 5 - 10 years old i learned German and French. It is hard for me to keep the languages if i don\'t talk to someone, I lose it fast.
I used speak good German, and French now I could probably understand about 1/3 German, and 1/5 of the French. :D

Hey! Same thing happened to me. It was me and FackinKubbass playing Counter-Strike on de_train and we saw some guy named "Animal Mother". It wasn\'t our Animal Mother though. When the guy overheard us he was all confused saying "Do I know you?" and when I told him that we (me and Fackin) know a guy name Animal Mother he kept asking questions like "Where do you know him from?", "What message board?", and finally "Tell him to change his name."
Back on topic, I used to be fluent in Irish (I was born in the US but moved to Ireland and lived there for 6 years). Irish itself isn\'t the dominant language over there, English is, but I went to an all-Irish speaking school so I was around people speaking it all the time............
That was about 3 years ago and since I\'ve lost almost all of it. :(
All I know are very basic stuff, and I pretty much completely forgot how to write it. Almost. I\'ll try to write something phonetically:
Chunas a taw too? Taw mey ag kaint as gaelga. Taw DocWiz amadon.

That\'s right!
The other two sentenses are quotations from the songs I have at the site!
Ubashal ya ez doma = I ran away from home
O kak donga tebya nash dena = o how (something) you our day
And Vot eta da is an expression that I can\'t translate well. It\'s like "Well will ya look at that!" (Mostly I say it when I pass by a fine specimen of the female gender.)

But seriously folks, I\'m trying to bring world culture here. Listen to the wide variety of music Russians have, plus, some of it is great dance music!
http://www.arches.uga.edu/~jasong/russian.html
(I\'m not plugging my site, I think it\'s not a great site, I just want people to hear a little Russian music.)
Try at least three different songs, they\'re all very broad in genre!
-
I can speak English, Swedish and some German. :)
