Hey I found this on Slashdot
Gerhard F writes: "FinancialTimes reports \'Nokia to use Linux system.\' \'MediaTerminal will compete against Microsoft\'s Xbox video game console and UltimateTV digital TV recorder.\' \'We have made the hardware an open design so anyone else can make a clone or compatible product,\' said Mr Nelger. "We would rather have a small part of a large market than a large part of a small market if we had used proprietary technologies.\'"
And here\'s the link to the original story (http://news.ft.com/ft/gx.cgi/ftc?pagename=View&c=Article&cid=FT3GDI46PMC&live=true&tagid=ZZZC00L1B0C&subheading=information%20technology)
so what\'ya think?

WORD
We got to take the power back.
Renegades of Linux
-
If a linux based console comes to market that you don\'t need a license to develope for and the console works as the dev kit the industry could experience a true revolution. Please be true! Why did indrema have to die?
-
Well it\'s some sorts of media device that will be able to play video games.
What interests me is that Nokia is behind it.Well if it\'s true that is.
-
great ideas.. too bad they have to die... always they die..
indrema... poor little thing.:(
great ideas, but they have to fall to big companies.
-
Let\'s not forget the TuxBox from which we\'ve never heard from again
-
haven\'t they learned anything from indrema?
-
Well Nokia is making this,it\'s a whole lot bigger than Indrema.
-
wasn\'t there a big company that was kinda backing up indrema? was it samsung or something... hehe too lazy to go look it up
-
Hey, open systems are a great idea, but they rarely catch on... just think of the obstacles to overcome (that a large company is already set up to overcome):
- Distribution
- Amateur developers mean more titles, overall less quality.
- Amateur developers have difficulty with distribution.
- Marketing (aiming for a smaller market means less profit - skating closer to edge of \'loss\')
- They are competing against (1) dedicated hardware closed systems (bug free, faster), and truly (2) open systems (PCs and MACs) which have already got a foothold.
I love the idea of more competition in the market, but I don\'t think the games market can take this kind of idea easily....
