Sony Computer Entertainment America today announced that it plans to release a network adapter for PlayStation 2 in November 2001 for $39.95. The adapter will provide PlayStation 2 owners with an online solution for consumers be combining analog connectivity with high-speed broadband access.
Sony expects the network adapter to bring PlayStation 2, which has already shipped more than 3.7 million systems to date, to the next evolutionary stage in gaming. The network adapter combines high-speed Ethernet connection with a V90 analog modem that will allow consumers network access and connection to multiple devices in the home through PlayStation 2 at the same time. By connecting to a broadband network such as CATV and DSL through Ethernet, PlayStation 2 can also be connected to analog telephone lines. These capabilities allow for immediate access to online games available to a wide audience on PlayStation 2.

What I am confussed about is this, on ZDNET GAMESPOT they say that the adapter will be shipped with the harddrive. Is this true or am I just dreaming?
-
does this mean that if i already have an internet connection ( sympatico hight speed ) i can plug it to my ps2 with the adapter or am i completely lost ?
-
I was wondering the same thing.
-
coz seriously i really would like to go play ps2 games online ! but i don\'t wanna pay a second connection ! It would be smart from sony to let us connect to other internet connections ! this way their will have alot more users for the ps2 internet

56k gamin!!! hmm. lag can become an issue, but its better for money!!
-
ok ........ well i guess it would be better for me coz i have high speed
-
well.... was the lag all that bad on the Dreamcast? i don\'t think so...
-
Wait I\'m kinda confused. What if you dont have broadband, cable, dsl etc at home..just a run of the mill 56k..does that mean I would be getting the short end of the stick if I try to play online with my ps2
-
You\'ll be able to play online, just don\'t expect no lag. I\'m glad Sony decided to release the ethernet adapter by itself, I never wanted the hdd anyway.

No, no. Its a package with the network adaptor and the HDD!
And its all for just $39.95!!!!
AMAZING...

39,95 $ (USA) ? coz if yes ... well for me it cost alot more
-
No it isn\'t. All it mentions is that the adapter has an interface for the hdd. None of the articles mention that it comes with the 40gig hdd.
From ps2.ign.com;
"This coincides with a strategic alliance with AOL, which was announced yesterday, where SCE plans to release the network adapter along with a hard disk drive giving consumers access to AOL features like instant messenger, email, and chat."
Notice how it says they are realeasing a network adapter along with a hdd? To me that means that they are selling them separately.
-
Oh right, whatever. Guess I read it wrong. :)

You guys, if you have broad band you won\'t have lag. The adapter is a 56kmodem and ethernet adapter in one so you won\'t need to buy something else if you upgrade to broadband or if you just wanna stick with 56k. 2 in 1 it\'s great!
