I don\'t think so if i had to pay more than $350 for all that i won\'t buy a sony ps2, the xbox will have all that for $299, Sony you won\'t win the console wars with that strategy, one thing add-on\'s don\'t sell well sony should sell the network adapter-HDD very soon before GC and XBOX launch for a cosiderable installed online base
-
Sony will probably drop the PS2\'s price right before the Xbox and the NGC are launched, so it won\'t be a problem.
-
In the UK it is expected that the PS2 will drop from £299 to £199 in September. Sony were going to do a price drop sooner but it would have only been £50......

What??
A 40GB harddrive plus enthernet adapter for ONLY 39 dollars??
Is this true?
A 40GB (7200rpm) hdd here in sweden costs about 200 dollars.
hmmmmm

Ethernet adapter and hardrive are seperate. But cambubmba, you\'re wrong about one thing. Xbox has a ether net adapter out of the box but no modem. So you have to still get some kind of broad band modem, but they don\'t have an option for 56k which most people have. Sony\'s ethernet adapter is hybrid with 56k so it\'s an all in one solution. So if you don\'t have broad band, and most people don\'t, you\'re gonna be spending alot more that 39.99 to get online.

Ok, Tack Bossieman :)

only the eithernet card costs 40$.
i think sony would take losses on the harddrive.. it could.
it should.

Another thing you have to remeber is that Xbox doesnt come with DVD out of the box,you have to buy an add on to activate it.
-
well... here\'s what i think sony will do... they will drop the price of the PS2 to around $200-$250....
then they will charge 299 for a bundle... it will come with an extra controller and the broadband adapter or HD.....
what i want is the network adapter... can\'t wait till some multiplayer games with the PS2 and my cable connection

Yes, but DVD movie functions have nothing to do with the games. Online and HDD do. So you can\'t compare the 2.
-
No, he\'s replying to a post about features vs cost, and so you can compare any feature. The adapter costs more for PS2, the DVD costs more for the box. It won\'t matter much neways, I wouldn\'t place any bets right now as to how either console or add-on will do. I can\'t predict how people will react to each seperate feature...

Does the ethernet adapter really come with a HD? I was looking around yesterday and I saw some info about the adapter, but it mentioned no where a HD.

No. The HDD is seperate from the online adapter.

any news on when they will anounce the hardrive cost??
-
Does anyone else think that Sony has created themselves some problems by selling the ethernet/modem and hdd seperate? If they kept them together they only had two different setups to worry about, now they have regular ps2 owners, ps2 with connection and ps2 with connection and hdd to cater for, not to mention it might get a little confusing for the average joe who might wind up picking up a hdd without the adapter to get it on the net D:

how were you right??? this is just some other forum member saying how sony screwed up, we\'ll see how it works out in the end

I think not everyone needs a network adaper or a hardrive. not all games are online you know?
and the hardrive in some cases would have some benefits that are not related to the network adapter, so it actually can be bought separatly, like in the case of some games making extra use of the hardrive for larger worlds.
but it is true, the best use of the hardrive is with the network adapter, to download demo games or movies.
another use of the hardisk is for the development on PS2 with linux ( but i am not sure if this will release stateside or not ).
as others have said, the price of PS2 will reduce, propably around 30% if not more. and this will make it in the same range with x-box ( 300$ with network and hardisk ). and it\'s true that sony will have online games this year, while x-box is planning for 2002.

How was I not right? 3 different configurations = less support for anything but the basic configuration (the basic PS2). If they packed the hdd and adapter together, they might have had a shot, but splintered 3 ways like this, few people will get them (in the extreme mainstream) and since the extreme mainstream gamers make up the bulk of most developers profits, they wont bother with support of the peripherals. Sure, some games will, but not most.

Anyone expecting a bigger than $50 drop in price will be very dissapointed. It won\'t happen. Sony\'s very c0cky, and think\'s the DVD playback is equal to XB\'s HDD and Ethernet, so they will easily feel they don\'t need a bigger price drop.
-
Yeah, I agree that sony are underestimating the xbox so they won\'t be dropping the drop any more than £50.
