Square Going Multiplatform?
05.22 8pm EST
At a shareholder meeting this morning in Tokyo, Square president Hisashi Suzuki delivered disappointing financial news to investors. Largely blamed on the delay of Final Fantasy X for the PlayStation 2 and the PlayOnline Network, Square profits tumbled for the fiscal year. More importantly however, president Suzuki-san briefly addressed developmental concerns. Specifically, in light of expected competition from Nintendo\'s GameCube and Microsoft\'s Xbox, Suzuki-san said Square is interested in moving away from creating standalone console titles to delivering their games to a worldwide audience in the future. >>>>!!!!!!!!Moreover, he confirmed that negotiations with Microsoft to work on the Xbox have been ongoing for nearly two years.!!!!!!!<<<<<

If this is true this makes my xbox purchase even better. Whoa, if they sign xbox is here to stay plain and simple. What do you great people think of this?
-
It will surely help the xbox that\'s for sure. Especially in Japan.
I hope that if it\'s true, Square will go the SEGA route and develop different games for the different consoles and not just ports.

Sounds cool. This will bring pressure on Sony to either get of their butt and produce more quality games or...........invest heavily in Square, therefore forcing them into developing more for the PS.2.
Either way it\'ll bring some movemovement into the game market :)

True, or square loss alot of money off that ff movie it was like the second most expensive movie in history.

Didn\'t Sony invest alot in the Final Fantasy movie?

Yes they did, and you will be expecting Sony to bring that up also.
Sony: Don\'t forget Square we made that Final Fantasy movie, so any move to the X-Box would be hell for you.
Square: Ok, Ok, we will stay.

Actually, add this in place of that last one...
Square: Don\'t forget we helped you sell lots of systems before you were king of the game world. We helped give you the lead, and push N64 off to the side for 2nd place.
Don\'t hate me for the truth...

I dont mind where square goes if they want to
GCN, DC, ps2, atari, couldnt care less I will eventually get the xbox when its like dirt cheap and Im getting a gamecube and already own alot of consoles.
SQUARE CANT HIDE FROM ME!
muhaha

their poor fiscal year is due to the fact they didnt release many games, who they made those games for is irrelevant. Imagine how much money they would have lost if Sony werent helping them out???
they will remain with Sony

I think the same ! ;)

I agree with BizioEE and Bobs_Hardware! :D
FF movie will give them all the cash they need.
And they are planning a new FF movie aswell.. (with sony cuz they own Colombia)

I see that a lot of people here do not understand business. Most if not all third parties are going to go multi-platform the generation. It is the smart thing to do. COmpanies know that they need to maximize profits and being loyal to ONE company is not going to do that(unless you are a second or third party) It is not like a FF movie can not be made somewhere else. Sony is not going to just cancel the release of the movie. Bad Business. Square is going multi-platform. Companies like Enix and such can afford to support one console because they don\'t make as many games as Square/EA/Sega/Konami/etc. I will bet any amount of money that Square WILL develop for the Xbox and most likely the GCN. Get over it.
Sony can say anything they want about "helping" with the movie but Square has made FAR more money for Sony then Sony is "giving" to make this movie. I put giving in quotes because Sony knows that this movie will be a hit and that they will be making the lion\'s share of profits from it. Not square.
-
aslong as sqaure makes great game si will follow them but this year has not been kind to sqaure but that is their own dang fault not sony\'s - they are the ones that made games like the Bouncer and that racing game which name i can\'t remember - they were not what they were cracked up to be and sold badly - either way i think that sqaure will go where the money is and i have a filling that what ever Xbox negotiates Sony will try to as well
-
If Square goes to X-Box, and then becomes their main focus of games, I hope PS2 blows it out of the water. I just don\'t wanna go another generation saying that Sony won because Square was on their side. That is all BS. People act as if their are the greatest gamers, yet their talent is highly concentrated on ONE type of genre...RPG. Go Sony!

boring???, your the only person who thinks that, i played Grandia 2 and all it was was a game that had hope but didnt have a good story line
-
boring???, your the only person who thinks that
You sure of that???? Cause many people didn\'t give a rats ass for FF7( i have people tell me they liked FF3 american ver better). Then again many people LOVED it. But hey why are we talking about FF7, oh yeah i know why cause FF8 sucked and so did FF9.
Square has done nothing innovative for a long time, all they like to do is make FMV and the name FF sells. AS for Grandia 2 the gameplay was something New that we rpg fans needed. The story line to Grandia 2 was not the best, I ADMIT, but hey nor was FF8 or FF9.

You\'re either a FF fan or not. At the same time FF7 brought many new people to the world of rpg\'s. I never got into Grandia 2, so I can\'t comment too much on it, but I enjoyed the hell out of FF7. After waiting 2+ years for it, I better have. I\'ll admit I\'m a die-hard FF fan (except for FF8 -eww) so I\'ll pretty much like any of them. Though I\'m not blind, and for many reasons I despised FF8. Oh yeah, I digress, the point is, you guys keep on arguing about opinions. Trying to pass them off as facts. No one can say FF is the best, or that Grandia was better, because in the end it\'s all an opinion. :)

I already know it\'s all a matter of taste, but you have to admit, which was my whole point. Square has done nothing really innovative or revoluntionary with the rpg genre.

Nope. They\'ve just kept making the same kickass RPGs. It almost angers me.

well hey if you like them, then all the power to you bro!

Sorry, I can\'t stnad Nintendo since the day I found out that they were the reason that SMS had such an untimely death.
I have no bones against Sony for killing Saturn and DC, because Sega shot themselves in the foot. Nintendo used marketing muscle to bully other companies away from developing. Their business tactics are shrewd, their games are very much alike, and I just altogehter can\'t stnad Pokemon.
Nintendo should just go the software route. At times they seem over confident like the much hated EA.
Die Gamecube.
Eric Jacob
PS - of course I am getting a gamecube and want it to be successful, I just can\'t think of Nintendo coming out on top!

Nor can I, i still see Nintendo serving that small niche they have always had.

Ill give you that ff8 sucked cuz personally I didnt like it either, the seed lvls etc...
But there was nothing wrong with FF9 I enjoyed it and Im pretty sure others did too
-
we\'ll see how FF10 doest against Grandia 2 for ps2, until then i wont say anything more about both the rpgs

then why do so many companies mimic their style of gameplay and why is that everytime they release a game it brings something new to the market
i will agree that lately they haven\'t brought much new except for great stories but in the past Sqaure made the RPG markket what it is today with games like Chrono Trigger / FFIII / Secret of Mana I&II / - ofcourse there were more but these games are the ones that made me a fan of the RPG genre
-
we\'ll see how FF10 doest against Grandia 2
First off if ff10 has the same old battle system, with no real-time fighting, than same old same old. Also it better not have invisible enemies. Plus how can you compare it to an rpg that has been out for a while and when ff10 isn\'t even complete. FF10 will be nothing revolutionary, again the only game looking to take that place is PROJECT-EGO.
-
past Sqaure made the RPG markket what it is today with games like Chrono Trigger / FFIII / Secret of Mana I&II
I totally agree, and that is why there name SELLS!!! but Now is the present, and as it stands they offer nothing new. Like I said before it\'s grandia 2 that square needs to look at. I loved the battle system, although I expect see much more innovation in PROJECT Ego. Kind of like you see the creature and just right then and there you fight him, no need for the game to go into a special battle mode. So who knows you could start fighting the monster or person in a field and end up dueling it out in town, you get what I’m saying
-
Godly, you can\'t expect square to take out the invisable characters in FFX. To me that would be crazy. Invisable characters and the battle system is what made Final Fantasy what it is. It Signify\'s that you are playing Final Fantasy. Only thing that square seemed to change in the past Final fantasy was the magic and skills elements.
FF7- materia
FF8- junctioning, gf etc
FF9- ap/sp
Changing parts to a game that clearly shows that you are playing that game is wrong. Thats like saying certain things in Zelda should change and Mario shouldn\'t fight bowser. Might not be the greatest examples but its sort of late here and a bit tired
But the fighting style and the gameplay of Final Fantasy is what makes Final Fantasy what it is.
-
. Invisable characters and the battle system is what made Final Fantasy what it is.
Dude you can\'t do that same SHlt forever, invisible characters etc.. was done cause that was the best they could do with the technology at time. what you said is the same as, "Why should they make mario a 3D game when jumping up and down and running through levels is what made Mario what he is today"
Grandia 2 Was the first to move beyond the typical gameplay. Now it\'s time for square to take the RPG genre and make it incredible like they did in the SNES times. They have the resources and developers to do it.
Problem is they need a platform with a HDD to take the game play to the next level, like SEGA is trying to do with Panzar dragon.
Just imagine what they could do with a HDD. Oh and in case your thinking that i mean XBOX, PS2 has a HDD add-on . Maybe square can make a game from scratch and Sony pay for the HDD that can come with the game
-
They should change somethings otherwise no one would play it. I totally agree, but change things to a certain DEGREE
Lets say if they made a Grandia 3, would you like to see the battle system you love in 2
or see a total new battle system? that could potentially suck for some and some will like
To my knowledge everyone loves the grandia 2 system so keep it. It\'s like the saying " if it aint broken, dont fix it "

The game sounds to much of living your life out
sort of reminds me of Ultima Online for Pc
But none the less it does sound cool
but out of curiosity whats the story line? I dont recall reading one
-
The game sounds to much of living your life out
Man that game sounds PIMP!! don\'t forget it\'s from the creators of Black&White, therefore we know they will do a good job on the game.
Also how come square is not making another Crono triger for this generation????
-
Well I have no Idea for Chrono Trigger because I never played it and am waiting for the psx re release with final fantasy 4 this july
Chrono Cross however I did play and I couldnt tell you if it was a good sequal because never played the first but a friend of mine played both and said it did link ok

Too many fights, i\'ll just say this:
FF (any PSX version)= ZzZzZzZz after 1st disc without exception.
-
FF (any PSX version)= ZzZzZzZz after 1st disc without exception
That\'s what i said eairler. Although I do respect those who enjoyed them, I Just found them to offer nothing new to the table my HO.

I think Final Fantasy is the single most over-rated series, so if they go multi-platform it makes no difference... I don\'t see any third party *wanting* to stay exclusive to one company this generation. THere is way to much money to be made.
But, they do have nice toys...
;)

Yes. I\'m happier owning a Vivi plush doll than owning FFIX. :D

Square has done nothing really innovative or revoluntionary with the rpg genre.
disagree...you may think Final Fantasy hasnt been innovative for the past few ones, but Square have many otehr RPG\'s hich are innovative...and not just RPG\'s either
Dude you can\'t do that same SHlt forever, invisible characters etc.. was done cause that was the best they could do with the technology at time.
when square want to do something different with their RPG\'s, they make a whole new game. I love final fantasy for what it is, and i love Squares other games because they are different to Final Fantasy. Thats why im disappointed that FFXI is online only, make it FF: Online or something, like FFTactics
they are the only arguements i could put forward...look ****ing lazy
-
Bob - you cant just say that they have other innovative RPGs and other games that are innovative and not state them.
Please, for my sake, tell me what games you were reffering to. For the likesof me, I cant figure out any games that are innovative by Square.
Eric Jacob
-
Well, for one, the mighty Xenogears.
Yunno, if FF is so stale to you guys, and you obviously don\'t plan to continue with the series, why sit here and incessantly ***** about it? Go play Grandia 2 and shut the hell up already, and leave the rest of us who LIKE FF alone.
-
Because this is console debating, and we can ***** about how old the series has gotten since FF3.
Xenogears was innovative how? I never really got into it (My PSX(no.2) broke while I was playing it)

It had a combo-based battle system which I enjoyed. Other than that, it just had the best storyline any game could ever hope to have.
My philosophy on games: I don\'t give a damn if a game doesn\'t innovate, as long as I have fun with it.

If everyone thought like that we would all still be using lincoln logs and legos. Eventually a company HAS to innovate in order to introduce new ways to have fun. If we let them the industry will remain in a state of complacency and that should not be what any of us want. If we just settle for the status quo then that is all they will give us.
-
I agree, innovation drives the market, expanding it in great ways.
-
Bob - you cant just say that they have other innovative RPGs and other games that are innovative and not state them.
eh, well it really is hard for me to comment on this one, seeing as Square games seam to be rarely released down here in Aust...but i for one thought Vagrant Story was quite innovative, one of the only Action RPG\'s i enjoy playing

What I mean is that innovation is great, but all to often developers try to be too innovative and just screw everything up. And then, you have people who think that every game in a series must evolve radically from one game to another to be good. All too often in gaming media, innovative automatically = good, and that isn\'t always the case.
So I guess I should word it differently:
I don\'t care if a game is groundbreaking, I care more that it\'s fun.

Seriously calm down. I am not arguing his personal tastes I am merely stating my opinion on his statement.
Yes I like innovation in games but does that mean I hate FFX? No. I respect the FF series for what it is; but after FF7 they just weren\'t fun to me anymore. Even knowing this I will STILL buy FFX to try it out first. But you also better believe that I will be FIRST in line to get games like Project EGO and Shenmue II. I will also encourage everyone else to buy them because just like the music industry if we buy into it the will keep making it.

That basically is similar to what I think. That\'s why I enjoyed every Final Fantasy including 8. I didn\'t care about all the flaws it has got as long as I am having fun with playing it.

well there is more to it than that but i see what you are going at and i do agree to a point
the battles are pretty reptitive but there is strategy to beating each enemy
almost everygame is repetitive when you think about - because in a game there is usually one goal and mainly only a few formats to reach that goal

I don\'t finish most games for that very reason. I play for fun. When it ain\'t fun, I stop.

well being maxed out does not help you at all actually = the higher level you are the higher level the final boss is and therefore makes the battle a lot harder
i hope you have a save before you starting max out your characters or else you will have to keep trying
-
FF8 was undeniably poo. I don\'t conceive how any gamer could like this game.
Here is an overview of the game.
walk two steps.
fight plants or bees or something stupid like that.
Use GF\'s of any kind to beat them.
Get Diablo.
Use GF\'s to beat Diablo.
walk two steps.
Use GF\'s to kill it.
walk two steps.
Use GF\'s to kill monster(s) x1000.
get to endguy.
use GF\'s and limit breaks to defeat it.
woohoo! A little variety is thrown in towards the end! Excellent game! :p
that gamewas pure crap. ANd if it were released as Squall\'s Struggle, or something other than FF, it would have sold all of 4 copies. Brand name in America is major kicking and a lasting brand name will sell instantly. Look at Sony electronics, no way they are the best products for the money, but people still buy their stuff in droves because it has the name on it. Look at Vagrant Story, a truly magnificent RPG, yet it sold less than 100k in Japan and America.

Thanks that helps. I think I\'ll just buy ff9 & 10 and forget about ff8.

Even I have been quilty of this... After years of resistance I finally broke down in a weak moment, and bought FF7. What a letdown! I didn\'t know what to expect (other than \'the greatest RPG ever\'), but man... it was just so boring and some of the worst $25 I\'ve spent of a game. So slow and boring - not my kinda game at all it seems. Anyway, it might be a good game, but it\'s really good at hiding it then. :)
-
Hey, we all have done it in one form or another.
I have bought these games and been disappointed based on developer and name alone:
WSB2k1
Final Fantasy 7 and 8
Twisted Metal 3 (rented 4 and found out it was poo)
Madden \'99
DOA2
Street Fighter EX
We all make mistakes. I just usually (if possible) rent before I buy.
Some things I have lucked out on:
Panzer Dragoon
Jet Set Radio
Vagrant Story
Grandia (saturn)
GunGriffon
RollCage
a couple others.
