Hey
I found this article, thought you might find it interesting :)
Originally written by some guy at Bloomberg
LONDON--Microsoft\'s Xbox games console is \'\'finished,\'\' Ken Kutaragi, president of Sony Computer Entertainment, told the Financial Times.
\'\'Microsoft was finished before it even got started,\'\' Kutaragi said. \'\'They have no games\'\' and \'\'retailers in the US are already disappointed.\'\'
Kutaragi\'s comments reflect a change in opinion among analysts since Microsoft demonstrated Xbox at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles last week.
Before the exhibition, most analysts thought Xbox would be more powerful than Sony\'s PlayStation and Nintendo\'s GameCube.
The Xbox\'s 16 games \'\'were just extensions of PC games,\'\' Shunji Yamashina, a games analyst at Societe Generale, told the FT.
\'\'Nobody needs to buy an Xbox.\'\'

Strong words.It\'s just FUD though.Used by MS a number of times :)
-
Fear is shown in this statement.
The fact that he calls Jet Grind Radio Future, Project Ego, Project Gotham, Project K-X, Malice, etc. Extensions of PC games shows how much an opinion by him really matters. Gimme a break Sony.

-
Is it just me, or did anyone else detect just a hint of arrogance in that quote? My opinion of Ken Kuteragi has just gone down quite a few notches. This comment was not needed.
I wonder why we haven\'t heard anything from Phil Harrison in the past few months? That guy was smooth talker and usually knew his **** before he opened his mouth.
-
I didn\'t know Kutaragi worked for EA or Working Designs. Hmmm, how else would you explain the arrogance and stupidity of this statement?
-
As I said FUD.He\'s trying to scare people away from the X-Box.Not everyone keeps as close an eye on consoles as we do,and when they hear stuff like \'\'They have no games\'\' and \'\'retailers in the US are already disappointed.\'\' it sticks in their minds, the Playstation is a known label but the X-Box isn\'t.
This has been used by MS a number of times. Most people have heard about Windows, but not everyone has heard about Linux.That\'s why MS can get away with making bad remarks about Linux.
-
What can\'t the dumbass be supportive. J. Allard was very excited about Gamecube coming out before Xbox. But hey, Japanese Buisness men are notoriously conservative and competative.
-
Allard:..........Yeah, that rocks. GameCube launching days before our box.
Kutaragi:.......Yeah Xbox is sunk..haha.
Both are just PR BS. Period.
-
I have a feeling 2 years from now that Kutaragi will be eating those out of his mouth
-
I don\'t. I have a feeling Microsoft will be eating there arrogant words. you just said that because you are a fanboy. Sony is in a really good posistion right now. currently they are #1

AM, please stop picking fights with OgodlyThing. If you don\'t like what he has to say, then just ignore it... it seems you two are fighting all the time - please give it a rest.
-
the post could read
Sony\'s Kutaragi says Xbox "finished"
and
the X box development team takes this quote the wrong way and says "look we know , we are sorry about the delays.......it should be finished sometime soon "
-
No Ogodly, he won\'t be eating those words 2 years from now.......he\'ll be denying he ever said them:D Just like all PR people:)
-
Very true!

Well I belive that the x-box is history. Nobody here in Sweden is interested in it. MS has a bad reputation.
And if you think that people are going to pay 299$ for the x-box when GC stands next for 199$ and PS2 for 249$ or 199$.
299$in US is in Sweden like 450$. People thinks that the PS2 is expensive here (399.99$), well the x-box will cost that to, the difference is that nobody knows what a x-box is.
-
. Nobody here in Sweden is interested in it.
So what, sweden hardly makes up any of the gamming community.
it\'s all AMERICA and JAPAN. <--and also CANADA, he, he

Sweden is so important to the rest of the world about as much as Cuba. Nobody cares about them.
How much of the world\'s population is in Sweden? Not much.
Don\'t fool yourself into thinking, it really might hurt.

There\'s really no need to bad mouth Sweden now is there
Who said anything about bad mouthing them?

Hmmm Animal Mother, good logic. Sony is number one. Probably because it has had a year head start and...oh I dont know, the OTHER TWO CONSOLES ARENT OUT YET!
Quit *****ing about how much you hate Microsoft and the thread ruining that always goes on between you a TheO will stop! You pick fights like you have something to prove.

- The richest man in europe is swedish (owns Ikea)
- Sweden is faaaaar more advanced when it comes to broadband technolgey compared to US of A.
(Your precus Bill Gaytes even said so.. LOL!)
- Sweden is the leading country when it comes to education, welfare and so on.
- Sweden is one of the most advanced countries when it comes to medial sciance..

And after all that, Sony, Nintendo, MS and all the developers could give a sh1t about Sweden. WTF are you going on about? Sweden is nothing in the gaming world as a whole. Get over yourself, your country has nothing to be proud of... not that I think any country does.... Keep the discussion on gaming, and ignore DW.

EThugg, Sweden alone dosent mean much when it comes to games. (and the attention of MS, Sony and Nintendo!)
But sweden is apart of EUROPE!!!
Europe means much to game developers and bigger companies..
And NO.
Sweden has ALOT to be proud of.

Seriously don\'t bash what you don\'t know anything about. There is a whole world outside the US.Sweden,Denmark,Norway and Iceland are all far ahead the US when it comes to broadband technoligy\'s,education and healthcare. But ofcourse the US is far ahead us in many other aspects.

Europe as a whole still only makes up 20 percent of the market pie. America has about 45 and Japan has about 35. I am guessing of course.
BTW, I can\'t stnad vegetarians who are against it because they dont like animals beiong killed. Humans were made to be stronger and it is in the bible that we should eat them. Also, people who say they don\'t like the taste are full of BS. All meat products taste different from others. People who give it up for health reasons I am fine with. mad cow, hoof and mouth, clogged arteries etc. are fine by me!! ;)

Religious man eh Altered? The way I see it.. life on this planet has existed for 3.8 (roughly) billion years. For nearly that entire time, there has been predators who eat other animals. That\'s the way life goes. It\'s not this candy coated little "Let\'s be compassionate for our fellow creatures" BS.. it\'s tough.. and it\'s unfair. It\'s life. We desierve to feast on the flesh of other creatures because our ancestors evolved beyond the creatures that were eating them. Even the Native Americans who are widely percevied as being the closest people to nature and the earth eat the flesh of other animals.. and at one time of each other. (Crows would eat the liver of their enemies and new research has shown that the Pueblo tribes likely practiced cannibalism) The difference is, they respect and revere the animals they eat and thank the earth for providing their meals.
I\'ve got no problems with anyone who wants to be a vegetarian for whatever personal or medical reasons. That\'s their life, and they can live it anyway they choose as long as they don\'t try to force their beliefs on me, or try to make me feel like a SOB for liking my steaks bloody in the middle.
-
Yup, I am about as religious as they come (Mormon!) and while my beliefs differ (extremely) from yours, I still say right on, enjoy that sausage, egg, and chees croisannwich. Or that New York Strip Steak, or a double whopper.
hmmm, I am getting hungry!

the x box has some obvious reasons it wont do well, microsoft hasnt noticed them.
gamecube coming out 2 days before x box?
at time of launch, GC= $200
PS2=$200 (q3 price drop)
Xbox=$300
add on that, some americans hate microsoft no matter what.
parents would most likely buy a cheaper console, made by Nintendo, who has been in the industry and is more recognized with gaming that microsoft is.
Games: nintendo has always managed to get at least 2 or 3 AAA titles at the launch of each and every one of their consoles.
all consoles will be online, x box(correct me if im wrong, im remembering this one) wont have 56k compatability?
yes, i know sony switched. i think it was stupid, but its a smart buisness move. (they anticipated the industry to haveing tons of broadband by the time)
hopefully the games wont lag. that would suck.
sony has almost all of japan. japan does not like microsoft just look at what happened at TGS!!!(if you dont know, only the microsoft employees clapped after bill\' speech, and presentation.)
well thats what ive noticed that the general public would care about at the launch.
my guess who will end out on top would either be sony or nintendo.. but more leaning towards sony.

1-PS2 will not be $200
2-Parents chose Sony over Nintendo last time, and theres no garuntee they won\'t choose MS over Nintendo. Parents trust real companies like Sony and MS over smaller companies like Nintendo. The oonly thing in Nintendos favor with parents is Pokemon. If their kids love Pokemon, they\'ll go with Nintendo.
3-MS is launching with about 5 AAA titles. Including Munch and Silent Hill X.
4-Nintendo has stated they have no out of the box online plans. And MS is packing their adaptor, so its there when the network launches, no need for addons. MS may release a 56k addon if enough demand is there.
5-Actually, I read reports that Japanese game sites and gamers were quite excited about XB. Apprehensive? Yes, but when Square announces a few games, MS has everything except Sony and Nintendo 1st party games, which will bod well for their chances of moderate success in japan. Besides, DC failed in japan... what do they know?
We\'ll see who will come out on top... don\'t speculate.
Altered beast and Sonyfan: Canniblism, incest and bigomy are just as natural. You do all that? Altered, take your religion and shove it up your ass! Wave any book in front of my eyes to justify murder and ill gouge your ****ing eyes out.

I do not condone the killing of HUMANS. or the inhumane torturing of animals. but we as humans are fortunate enough to have such a wonderful thing available to us. If you dont think about what happens to these animals (created for OUR use. or underevoluted for our use) than you realize that it is a viable food, very tasty, and it just makes sense. yum yum, eat up!
I am not forcing you to eat meat please let\'s not kick my butt.

As a religious person, I assume your pro-life/anti-abortion. Think about the animals the same way, and you\'ll see where I\'m coming from. I don\'t expect you to agree, I know I\'m in the minority. That\'s one of many reasons I look down on the human race. IMO, \'animals\' (a misnomer, as humans are animals) are on the same level as humans, not below them. If you care about humans, I feel, you should care about all animals, not just human animals.
-
"Canniblism, incest and bigomy are just as natural. You do all that?" - EThugg
I can\'t see how you would think that Cannibilism, incest, and bigomy are just as natural to humans as eating animal flesh. Those are learned behaviors, with probably the exception of Bigomy (or at least infidelity). The morals of the culture you\'re raised in vastly shapes your view of these practices.
For instance canniblism is a very rare practice that is looked down upon by most cultures past and present. Most of those who do (or did) practice cannabalism don\'t do it very often. Mostly it\'s tied with religeon. There\'s cannibals in India who steal and eat corpses on occasion as part of their religeon. The Crow indians thought that by eating the liver of your enemy, you take his strength into you. Sort of the same with some South American rain forest tribes. There one tribe (can\'t remember the name) that liquifys the brains of their elders after they die and mix it in a special drink to be shared with the rest of the family so that the elders wisdom can be passed on. Almost NO culture on earth, past or present, considers human flesh a main staple of their diet. It\'s almost always religeous or superstisious in nature. Hardly what I\'d call natural behavior. If push came to shove in a survival situation.. I would probably resort to cannablism as an absolute last resort.
Well, that\'s it for right now. I\'ve got duckling breast tenders comming out of the deepfryer in about two minuites.
-
Sonyfan, I said natural you ****ing moron. Eating meat is NOT natural for most primates including humans, it\'s a choice humans have made for a long time. And in NATURE, the things I listed, ARE just as natural as eating flesh. Canniblism, incest and bigomy are \'bad\' by choice. Not by human nature.
-
Well maybe it wasn\'t natural for our ancestors 3 million years ago, but for modern humans it is. We have evolved to incorperate flesh into our diets.. which is why we have the teeth and digestive tracts that we do. It is also because of the protines in meat, which our ancestors at alot of, that helped fuel the expanded growth of our brains allowing us to become smarter and ultimately to build the society we have. Many of the vitamins and nutrients we currently need to stay healthy come from meat. It\'s not that big a deal today since you can import vegetables rich in these vitamines from all over the world.. but as little as a hundred years ago that wasn\'t possible. I also wouldn\'t consider our ancestors decision to eat meat a "choice", since it was an either eat meat or die situation.
BTW: It\'s not a common practice amongst most primates, but some of them do consume flesh. Babboons, Resus Monkeys, and (our closest living relative) the Chimpanzee all eat meat.
-
...I\'m confused now...maybe I\'ll buy the X-Box in Q1 2003...I want be sure it won\'t fail.....
-
Your so full of ****, and represent the thinking that\'s the problem with the human race. We shouldn\'t continue fighting, as you are just wrong, and facts have no effect on you. It is not natural NOW either. Humans DID have a choice. Flesh consumption has NO effect on brain development. And the human race was NEVER in a \'eat meat or die\' position.
-
Oh, and in Nature cannabalism, Bigomy, and incest are natural because of the harsh conditions the animals live in. Bigomy and Incest are expecially important to those animals because of harsh enviroments and small social groupings. If they didn\'t do anything and everything to reproduce... they\'d eventually start dying out.
Modern humans don\'t need cannabalism because we can find meat anywhere, and have the tools to hunt and kill it effeciently. But like I said before, it\'s still sporatically practiced mainly for religous purposes. Bigomy and incest are also not needed because of the sheer size of the human species. We\'ve cast those aside. However, we still need to eat meat because we need the invaluable vitamins and nutrients to stay healthy... expecially protine. It hasn\'t been until these last 50 years that most well off countrys have created the infrastrcuture to supply vegetarians with the wide array of vegetables needed to get these nutrients on a regular basis.
-
Hey, I\'m just repeating what I\'ve learned from the Discovery Channel\'s wide range of human origin specials. Mostly, from "Humans: Who are we?". You should watch it next time it airs. It\'s pretty interesting.
BTW: Here\'s a link to a page on the Discovery Channel\'s website which has "Absolutely NO facts to back me up." ;)
http://www.discovery.com/news/features/humanorigins/page2.html
That page isn\'t nearly in-depth as the TV special, but it gets the job done. Also, I apologize. It\'s true it\'s not FACT that the protines in animal consumption fueled the expanded growth of our brains.. however it\'s strongly theorized.
-
Well, we aren\'t going to agree, and I\'m too lazy to do research (that I did before, so I know I\'m right), to prove my views to you. You either respect life, or you don\'t. We got off on this ranting in a very wrong section... :)
-
Whoa, calm down people. I go to bed, and this is what I see when I get up? All hell has broken loose.
Please keep this ON TOPIC damnit. This is not about religion, meat, killing people, cannibalism etc. As exciting as those topics might be they don\'t belong in this thread.
BTW, to however said Europe was like 20% of the market - Europe is the biggest gaming market. Sony sold more PSX in Europe than in the States (though they were on a close 2nd place) and Japan. Just clearing that up.
Now continue in an appropriate manner, thank you.

If Europe was the biggest market, companies would focus on it most. They don\'t cause it isnt. Regardless of how many PSones were sold there. Besides, piracy is much more widespread in Europe, so Sony dosn\'t make more money there than the US or Japan. Well, on average... Japans economy is getting worse in the last few years... Also, \'Europe\' isn\'t a market. UK, Sweden, etc are markets.

True, it isn\'t a single country as such, but it\'s still a market. It\'s just a bit more difficult due to taxes, infrastructure etc. But believe me, it is the bigger market. So it doesn\'t matter that Sony sold more PSones here than anywhere else? How do you figure that?

Because a larger % of the userbase plays pirated games. The \'market\' that means anything is the market that buys games.
And the Euro markets are seperated.
-
I don\'t think there\'s any chance of getting this thread back on track. It\'s too far gone now. I was just interested in getting onto a more interesting subject and slow down the "Let\'s Bash Swedenfest" that was going on.
EThugg.. The way I understand it, Europe is considered one big region for most all purposes. There\'s just too many countries over there for any company to research market data on all of them. They do the same thing on this side of the Atlantic. It\'s just like how Canada and Mexico are part of the "North American" market. For some reason though, Japan is it\'s own market and the rest of the counties over there are considered the "Asian Market".
BTW: I do have respect for life in all it\'s forms. I also have respect for the cycle of life and am comfortable with it even with the knowlage that pain and death are inevitabley a part of that cycle. That\'s just life. What goes around, comes around. We\'ve had our time being the prey.. now we are the preditor.. eventually something (probably ourselves) will knock us down a few rugs and we\'ll eventually be the prey again. I just wonder if our future preditors will even glimpse the thought of being as "Compassionate" about life as you are before they rip out our distant decendants throat?
-

And that should effect my moral compassion how? I make decisions for myself. And excusing savage behavior because we were once prey (barely), and what anyone else is doing, is quite irresponsible. \'Hey, I can be bad cause he is!\'. Didn\'t your mother ever teach you? 2 wrongs don\'t make a right. A eye for a eye makes the whole world blind. My fellow America.... ummm, where was I going with this? :D
-
In no way should it effect your moral compassion. I was just offering up a hypothetical question. Food for thought. IMO, when it comes to the continued survival of your species.. there is no right or wrong. You either do what it takes to survive or you die. Simple as that. If nature has taught us anything, it\'s that life adapts. Life will adapt to our presence and eventually find a way to fight back against us and our "intelligence". It\'s no different than certain plants evolving poisons to keep animals from eating them.. and then certain animals evolving countermeasures against the poison so that they can feast. Nature won\'t show us mercy.. so I don\'t see why we should bend over backwards and possibly weaken ourselves by showering it with compassion.
Also, I don\'t understand you\'re "barely" comment when reffering to humans ancestors being prey for other animals. Do you think we just walked out of the jungle and started *****slapping mother nature with no opposition? If that\'s so.. then how come there are noumerous proto-human skulls sitting in museums all over the world with fang, teeth, and claw gouges in them, all dating back to times before we even used any sort of complex tools for hunting or scavenging. (More complex than flat rocks anyhow)
-
Nice Job SonyFan. I think you argued your point well, as EThugg wouldnt, after being provided with more evidence supporting your claim, look it up. You argued the better fight and IMO, you won.

Sweden has the highest rate of consoles in the world. Every swede buys games for 110$ each year. we have money we have broadband and we are actually so important to Sony that they let a special company distribute PSX,PS2 games PSX and PS2 consoles in scandinavia. We have PSx and PS2 stuff in every corner of our towns. Sony is looking on sweden for several reason. the main reason is that we have money and we buy games a LOT.

why the hell do you hate the U.S. most

GOD i hate comming late to Long Threads....
Anyhoooooooo
Kutaragi said it for ................ Welll for saying it sake.
the actual reason behind this can best be described as, a PRESS STUNT !
either that or he maybe had a bit tooo much to drink at E3.......
oh and P.S.
Great to see you on the Threads Bjorn, Love Sweeden but not as much as Bonnie SCOTLAND ;).

The reason, Bossieman, that Sony "lets" someone distribute the systems and games, is because the market is NOT important enough. Sega does the same thing with TecToy in Brazil. People dont buy the systems or games in droves down there anymore because TecToy has jacked up the price of games and systems. WHich I suspect your "special" company has down.
Don\'t fool yourself, if game compnaies didn\'t have Sweden, I don\'t think they would miss anything.

i forgot what this thread was all about.
are we talking about meat, apes, or dipsticks?

I skipped a whole bunch of posts after the Sweden debate, so I have no idea what\'s going on. First of all, Sweden has done many good things.
America is paranoid.
Cuba isn\'t evil. You Americans must really get off your "communism-is-the-king-of-all-evils" mentality. Even though I don\'t applaud all the things Castro has done in the past, he has created a country where everybody can read (yes, you read this correctly) and it runs itself quite nicely. Children must go to school and all learn to read. America is a little behind in the education business (a little?). Canada isn\'t so great education-wise either, but the US really has something going to wrong way. You can obviously tell by which way the vote for presidency went *cough* *cough*
Anyways... Europe is also more advanced in some areas technologically. Europe and Asia that is. Both have had superior internet and cell phone connections (digital, broadband and the like) than North America. Also, computers are taught well in Europe (no taking stupid chemistry courses to get into computers... stupid education systems).
That is all.

you say you hate the U.S. all the time but you never say why, how about you give a reason to why you hate the U.S. so much

cuba isnt evil???? are you smoking crack? did fidel give you one of his cigars??
ill ask you this:
why the **ck is it that hundreds of people try to PADDLE hundreds of miles from cuba to america?
why?
Why would they go out in cardboard rafts, in shark infested waters in 10+foot swells knowing that they most likely will just be picked up by an american military ship and be hauled back?
for the idea of freedom. for the idea of having a life.
Why is it that cuba demanded that we not take them over during the cuban missile crisis before giving the nukes back to russia?
If it wasnt for that, there wouldnt be a cuba today. we wouldve taken it out.
and why was Elian Gonzales brought to a rehab school after being "exposed" to american ideals? in those schools they brainwash the kid into thinking DEMOCRACY is evil.
and why does cuba have its military patroling the coastlines, not letting anyone escape?
Why?

Your right.. But florida, washington ect. wouldnt exist either.
If the Americans were to invade, the russians would have launched the short distance nukes at the marines in the water.. (and the battleships)
And then launching the medium range missiles twoards Washington and Florida.
You should be glad that Che wasnt in power then..
Cuz he said;
"If I had controle of those missiles, I would have launched them"
(that was after the Russians took away the nukes from Cuba)
Btw, America wasnt the "winners".. No one was..
Yes the Russians took away there nukes.. But the Americans also took away the nukes in Turky..

wait did i say anything about the US being winners?
i .. dont.... think....... so..........
i might have implied it somewhere in there, but i didnt mean it that we won. and i didnt say it.

Kutaragi would say something like that only if SONY was threatend by the competition. I don\'t like it, but hey so what, We will be the winners in the end, more choice, more games, better gaming.
-
And Sony is afraid of losing thier large market share. They are still imposing thier threats on the retailers(software inc. Babbages). Saying if they sell Dreamcast bleem for GT2 Sony will pull all thier prouduct. Forcing them to move all PS2 and PS1 prouduct to the front of the store. And whats up with the Half-life conversion for DC canned when its done. Perhaps someone thinks it looks better than the PS2 version(Sony bought off Eidos to can the DC version of Soul Reaver 2 just like they did for Tomb raider 2 for the Saturn). Sony is playing dirty always has and forcing everyone to remain quite about it. I believe the PS2 is a great machine on its own Sony is going overboard with these kind of statements and tactics. However MS has as much money as they do and will be no pushover. Perhaps they have done this in Sweden too. Just a thought.

But the commies are evil. Look at how they treat people in China and (back in the day) the Soviet Union.
Democracy: Speak out and be free!
Communism: Speak out and be shot!

Communism is not evil...
If the goverment is corrupted then any ideology will be evil..
Dont swallow everything your goverment says..
Think for yourself instead...
There is alot of wrong things in every ideolegy!
Like capitalism..
The richer get richer and the poorer get poorer..
Not good.

Ummm... yes I do hate the US most.
Bozco- I do have friends, and while I had a dysfunctional childhood in ways, I had a loving caring mother, which is all you really need...
And the world (actually humanity/society, I got no beef with dirt...) is a ****ed up place. You, ddaryl and anyone else, can dilute yourselves into being happy with anything you want, I\'m a realist.

Ok, this has gone on long enough I think... Time to close this one. :)
But I\'ll agree with EThugg on one thing - the world is a screwed up place.
