Title: Half-Life locks onto PS2

It’s not exactly cutting edge but after having a seismic impact Half-Life had on PC there’s every chance it could also stamp its authority on the PS2

Two years ago Half-Life was unleashed into an unsuspecting world. It’s combination of fantastically intense first-person action and (for videogames at least) a riveting, tempestuous plot with more unexpected turns than Stevie Wonder in an F1 car, was incredibly well received.
Developer Gearbox Software is quick to point out that Half-Life PS2 is more than a simple port. First and foremost, despite PS2’s support for mouse and keyboard, the majority of players will solely utilise the dual-shock pad. To that end, Gearbox has been working tirelessly to ensure the game plays as instinctively as possible. Thus, as well as adapting Half-Life to support a pad, the developer has also included a Zelda-stylee lock-on feature to give console gamers a little additional support. The rest of the controls will be entirely customisable and, of course, the more discerning FPS fan can still frag away via mouse and keyboard should they wish.

The plot in the single-player game will remain exactly the same, but to compensate for a lack of online play a co-operative mode is included called Half-Life: Decay. This mode will largely be the same as the original, except at least two new major characters will be included who profoundly affect the plot. Further to this, Half-Life will include four-player multiplayer via the multitap and a wide range of multiplayer options.

Things are certainly hotting up for PS2 on the FPS front and Half-Life is going to have its work cut out with Quake III, Unreal Tournament and Timesplitters 2 all in the frame. The biggest problem facing Half-Life is that it is a two-year old game, but if they can pull off all the proposed improvements and keep the frame rate high there’s no reason why this couldn’t be a fine addition to the PS2’s library. We’ll keep you posted on the game’s progress but in the meantime check out the latest bunch of shots.

Looks like they just used some shots from the PC version to me, albeit with hi-definition models. Check out the last picture posted, it looks like a very high resolution shot scaled down, the small hud icons/text and the console message \'wrote halflife.tga\' gave it away - the rest I might have believed were PS2 shots, but the last one put doubt in my mind, wish they wouldnt do that.

Half-Life has one thing that could make it work for the console, unlike Quake 3 and Unreal.

A great single player game.

how many games are you going to get??
every thread about a ps2 game you say that you are going to buy it!
do you have a job? or are you ultra rich?

this game looks quite nice, but why dont they put some facial expressions into the faces!!!

the first and last shots have the people either smiling, or being nuetral.

i think it would be kinda scary having a guy with a gun run after me smiling and shooting:D

I\'ve played this game so many times that the single-player experience isn\'t worth it to me even with better graphics.  I love this game but im not sure if I want to buy it for the PS2.  This one I\'ll probably invite some friends over and rent it.  For those who never played the game, I highly suggest buying.  It gets high marks on my grade card.

The DC version is canceled. Yesterday I saw the PS2 version on TV and it looks like crap. But I will wait for the full version and then We will see how good it is. Co-op is so cool :)

How many of you folks who say you\'re definitely going to buy this have already played through the PC version?  I\'m just curious because I\'ve been playing HL since it was first released, and I don\'t see enough added content in this release to warrant me buying it for the PS2.  Don\'t get me wrong, it\'s an awesome game.  If you\'ve never played it, you probably won\'t go wrong buying this version.

I exhausted the single player mode on the PC version and started playing deathmatch multiplayer.  I got bored with deathmatch and started playing Team Fortress Classic.  I got sick of TFC, and started playing Action Half Life. Not too long after that I started playing Counter-Strike, and everything else pales in comparison.  This PS2 version doesn\'t even include online multiplayer, so I\'m not interested.

The extra mission, Decay, will be a cooperative effort starring two chicks who are HEV suit trainers, or something.  Also, the graphics upgrade is supposed to be better than the soon-to-be-released upgrade coming for the PC original version.  We\'re talking fully articulated faces and hands with added details to clothing as well.

Those shots are indeed from the PS2 version, as all models have individually rendered fingers, a small detail featured in the PS2 version.  The bottom shot is definitely from Decay.

Also, are you sure the DC version is canned?  Last I heard it was set for a June release.  It was supposed to include Blue Shift wasn\'t it?

As a sidenote, Decay can be played single-player style, except your help will be an AI controlled bot, that you can control at any time.  Apparently, several levels will REQUIRE specific teamworkings.

I may get this, it depends how satisfied I am with Red Faction.  I played it on my comp, but only in software mode, and I never finished it.

PPS- Also, its reported that the game is already running at 60fps and has half-second load times between levels.  Impressive...most impressive.

I\'ve read a few feature storys about this one in magazines. They put comparison shots of the PC version, and while the PC version looked damn good for it\'s time, this one just blows it away in poly count and detail.  This game sounds fun, I\'ll get it if it turns out as good as I\'ve heard.
Somebody sayed it looked like crap when they saw it running in this thread. Was there jaggies and stuff?  The polys, while there are tons of them do look a liitle ruff around the edges in the 3rd shot
