Metal Gear... The Movie?
« on: June 01, 2001, 08:37:03 AM »
In today\'s Hollywood Reporter:

Quote
Spector, Josh.  " H\'wood\'s got game _ and it\'s only begun." Hollywood Reporter, 6/1/01

With two major video game-based feature films invading theaters in the summer, it might seem that gaming culture has finally reached its Hollywood apex. Guess again. This is only the beginning.  When "Tomb Raider" and "Final Fantasy" hit the big screen, hard-core gamers won\'t be the only ones scrutinizing the results. An industry always in search of successful formulas will carefully monitor the films\' progress with one eye while figuring out how to repeat any success with the other.   Although the summer\'s offerings do not represent Hollywood\'s first foray into the video game genre, they do signify the industry\'s biggest financial commitment and, therefore, risk. Of course, with big risks come potentially big rewards.
...

So which games might be the next to get the big-screen treatment? The buzz at the Electronic Entertainment Expo was that Konami\'s Metal Gear franchise, SquareSoft\'s Parasite Eve, id Software\'s Doom and Microsoft\'s Oddworld: Munch\'s Odyssey are among the most desirable properties still available.

A closer look at Metal Gear reveals why Hollywood heavyweights have come courting. The game, which revolves around a high-tech spy, is a huge commercial success (its 1998 debut version sold more than 6 million units) and is very cinematic in nature. Its popularity in the gaming world is so great that when Konami packaged a one-hour playable demo of the game\'s sequel with its Zone of the Enders game, Zone became an instant best seller, thanks to Metal Gear fans eager to get a sneak peek. That kind of fan loyalty has the movie business drooling.  "The built-in audience that a popular game can provide is hugely important in today\'s world," Kasanoff said. "That kind of branding is the equivalent of casting a big star."

They forgot to mention Resident evil. Fear not, I saw the trailer. Umbrella is in it. They have a supercomputer controlling all operations, and someone infects the computer with a computer virus, all the monster get loose, scientists turn into zombies. It\'s much like Jurassic Park.

OK, so who would you cast in the Metal Gear Solid movie?  My friend and I talk about casting in hypothetical films all the time, it\'s fun.

I think Steve Railsback is cool, so although he\'s getting a bit old, I think he could play Snake.  You may know him as the character Duane Barry from a few X-Files episodes.

Or you could go the \'spirits within\' route - make MG the movie totally computer animated.  If you got all the voices from the videogames to make their respective appearances.. well... now that would have me drooling.

That doesn\'t mean he can act.  According to IMDB, he\'s done a lot of voice acting, but his screen roles have been very small.  For a film like this, I think the studio will be looking for one medium-to-high level star to anchor their investment.  Sort of like Angelina Jolie is doing for "Tomb Raider."  Probably Railsback isn\'t even a big enough star for them to consider.

It\'s interesting that he looks like Snake though.  Do you have a link to a picture?

He he ha.   Lets see Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, and maybe ?Duke Nukem?  Uhh what\'s next,  Fear Effect?  Who knows?  Maybe I\'m over reacting.   Just seems there is a lot of movies about videogames now.  They are even making a Harry Potter movie. (Harry Potter will be on the Xbox.  Electronic Game Monthly.)

Wow. A supercomputer controls operation and then this MAGICAL virus gets infected and monsters get loose.

How stupid of a storyline is that? This movie is just going to be horrible. A huge disgrace.

I\'d love to see how this virus gets in the computer. Or better yet how this "supercomputer looks". I\'m sure it will be nice and cheesey.
