Networking PC Games

Hi,
I have just networked the PC\'s in my house and I was thinking of trying out some network games. Since I have never bought a network game, nor a PC game, do you have any suggestions. Also, what are the steps involved in setting up game for network play.

Quake3 and Tribes2 are my fav. multiplayer PC games. But Tribes makes only fun with alot of players.

2 network cards and a HUB.  Goto any computer store and they will show you a kit with 2 cards, a hub, and all the cabling you needs.  Its quite simple escp. with the latest versions of Winblows..

I am already set up. I worked all weekend to run cables through my house. I am using a router and the network seems to be working fine. All computers have access to shared folders. Now I have to decide which game I will buy.

How many players are you going to have?  It\'s easy to say Quake / Tribes / Counter-Strike etc. are the greatest multiplayer games, but if you only have 2-3 players, they will suck for sure.  Ok, maybe they won\'t suck, but you will get tired of them fast.

I think strategy games are a better choice for a small number of players, so you should consider the traditional ones like Red Alert / Starcraft.  The one I would really recommend is Homeworld, which is VERY playable and enjoyable with as few as 2 players.  Ground Control might be another good choice, but I don\'t like the fact that you can\'t control individual units.

BTW, if you can find an cheap copy of Activision\'s Battlezone (the version released in 1997), then get it.  Deathmatch games in BZ are great with lots of players, but it also had a Strategy game mode that was fantastic with 2-4 players.  Be advised there is a learning curve.

There can be up to four players connected at the same time. Although, it is more likely that two players will be playing at one time.
