That dosen\'t look 3D to me. More like a Pseudo 3D, or basically 2D with a few 3D enhancments. This still has a long way to go before reaching the level of VRML web browsing. If you want to check out a REAL 3D web browser.. then check out Sony\'s Community Place browser.

Keep in mind though, that it\'s only a prototype that was made a few years ago. The reality of what they were trying to do just wasn\'t possible (or at least, not practical) over 56k modems. A modern day incarnation of it might have Webpages that are designed more like Q3 levels than anything you\'ll see with the Gamespot browser. Think of the entire Everquest world as just a webpage (granted a BIG webpage), and you\'ll start getting an idea of what can be done with this technology.

These are just some early screenshots of some worlds one of the CP programmers made back in 97. They were designed to be downloaded quickly over 56k modems, so their quality is pretty low even for it\'s time. You can imagine, though, what some further programming and vastly increased broadband userbase will do for VRML.

I downloaded it and it totally sucked. I got 192 megs of RAM on this 2K machine, granted that isn\'t that much, but it sucked all of it away. I had to go to ole Task Manager and kill the process. The User Interface also looks horrible.

As Sonyfan said though, in the future when broadband is the \'norm, we can expect VRML sites which will do alot for the web. I don\'t know how many of you have ever read about VRML or picked up a VRML programming book, but I totally recommend it. It is highly interesting.

The future of the web is Flash and other programs that are spawned from Flash. VRML needs to be destroyed and redesigned from the ground up. VRML websites are just not as intuitive as other sites which will downplay their viability. IMO, It will never become more than a novelty. Whereas Flash can deliver incredible interactivity and animation with EXTREMELY small file sizes.

I agree on both counts. the gamespot browser totally blows, and flash will be where its at in the near future. It is going to take a long time for true 3d sites to emerge and all that i have been to have been miserable to navigate. I also had a web site creation program that would let you use vrml and granted it was old and probably a junky program but it just seemed so awkward. Flash on the otherhand is incredibly fast loading and I am sure alot easier to program with.
