Problem with my Modem
« on: July 02, 2001, 12:02:55 AM »
OK this started 3 or 4 weeks ago. When my Modem(56k) is turned on and I get a phone call,my PC starts to boot up.
Now I checked in the modem properties if there are any Fax or answering options but I couldn`t find it.
Reinstalling windows didn`t help...well it`s not a big thing, but it gets annoying when I forget to turn the modem off.

P.S Thanks to our Dark Ninja Master for adding my pic !

What brand of modem and it\'s external I\'m guessing.  USB or serial?  What\'s your OS?

Macabre,

This is a BIOS setting you need to change.  Hold down the [del] key (that\'s usually what key it is) while your PC is booting.  When you get into the BIOS menus, there\'s some kind of setting that allows the PC to wake when it hears a ring on the modem line.  Sorry, I don\'t know exactly what it\'s called, because I\'ve never used this capability.  The feature is usually disabled by default, so I\'m surprised it\'s happening to you.

BTW, I\'m sorry I haven\'t replied to you regarding the mp3 file you sent me.  I really liked it, and I thought your band sounded very professional.  I\'m not in the record biz, so I can\'t help you out, but my brother-in-law (schwager?) is a professional musician.  He was the bass player in the band Badlands back in the late 80s/early 90s.  Maybe he would have some advice for you.

Exact! I think that is the problem, but then your modem must have fax capabilities... read the instructions or call the modem company.

O.K thanks all , I´ll try and find that BIOS setting and give myself a call from work just before I drive home.

And Coredweller :Glad you liked the song. As I wrote in the mail, I´ll post the link of our site when it`s ready (We don`t have the money yet - but we got the domain).

OK, I found the setting , it`s called "Power on Ring", but it was already disabled !
Now I have disabled the whole power management thing, and look if it works. First it messed up my system pretty hard.My CD Roms and mouse and video card were gone. But now I´ve managed it to work,I´ll post my results tomorrow.
