FF: TSW a flop?
« on: July 15, 2001, 09:05:32 PM »
MGM\'s "Legally Blonde" is No. 1 with moviegoers as the Reese Witherspoon starrer finishes with about $20.4 million, according to today\'s estimates. Paramount\'s crime caper "The Score" debuts in second place with an estimated $19.0 million. Last weekend\'s champ, Warner Bros.\' "Cats & Dogs" barks up an estimated $12.0 million in third place. Sony\'s "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" grosses an estimated $11.5 million in fourth place. The film has taken in an estimated $19.1 million since its Wednesday debut. Dimension\'s "Scary Movie 2" rounds out the top five with an estimated $9.5 million.

Guess Squares in some trouble... Tomb Raider took in $48.2 million it\'s opening (2 day) weekend. That\'s more than twice Fantasy\'s 5 day opening period. In fact, TR made more it\'s 2nd week too.

C\'mon... Legally Blond did better in its 2 days too! This is bad news for Square Pictures...

That\'s too bad cause it really was a good movie.  Maybe I\'ll go see it again and help them out a little more... ;)

I think this movie would appeal to the Japanese 10x more than North Americans.  Just dissimilar interests in movie making, which is expected.  What\'s the status of the international releases?

I want to make it clear that I personally loved the movie. I\'m sad about the news...

I haven\'t yet seen it, but I know it IS good. Perhaps I should help Squaresoft and go see it twice... ;)

Sad news, yes - and I can\'t believe a stupid movie such Legally Blonde is achieving more ticket-sales than our beloved Final fantasy!

After the initial cost of the movie rose from the expected $70 million dollars to a huge $115 million, Square has begun looking into alternative funding methods.

Under the planned scheme, investors and game fans will lend Square the capital required to finish the movie. If everything goes according to plan the investors will get their money back, if not they get to keep some of the assets used to make the film. This is the first time a Japanese company has used a scheme like this to help share the costs of making a movie.

The $45 million overrun has not deterred Square however. The gaming company has just signed a deal with distributors, Columbia Pictures, to produce another three movies. Thanks to Nikkei Net Interactive.

Another 3 movies?  Good luck Square....
