Nicolas CageSyndicated columnists Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith have revealed how Oscar-winning comic book fan Nicolas Cage landed the title role in the upcoming live-action feature film version of Marvel Comics\' Ghost Rider. Cage beat out actor Johnny Depp for the role of stuntman-turned-demonic anti-hero Johnny Blaze. So how\'d he do it? Ghost Rider producer Steven Paul advised Beck & Smith that Cage, upon hearing Depp was the front-runner for the role, rang up director Steven Norrington and declared "I am the Ghost Rider!" Paul says Cage proved "he was the biggest Ghost Rider fan in the world – and even owned five Ghost Rider motorcycles. He flew in from Hawaii (where he was filming Windtalkers) for meetings, and that was that. We\'re closing a deal with him now." Beck & Smith also report that filming on Ghost Rider is "expected to start in November, with locations slated for Canada and Arizona". Or will it?
The industry trades announced today that Norrington will direct the FBI thriller Tick Tock with Jennifer Lopez in the lead. Like Ghost Rider, Tick Tock has a proposed fall 2001 start date. Norrington is also expected to helm the Stephen Chin-scripted martial arts flick Hammer of God for DreamWorks. With two new projects announced so close to the apparent start date of Ghost Rider, Ain\'t It Cool News honcho Harry Knowles took it upon himself to ask Norrington directly about his plans. Turns out that the proposed fall start date for Ghost Rider has been postponed.
"I\'m going to do Tick Tock first," Norrington advised AICN. "As for Ghost Rider – it has the potential to be the best Marvel movie yet, particularly with Nic Cage starring, but it\'s not moving forward as fast as we anticipated, and we need loads of prep time – more than we had realised [sic]. It\'s a project that\'s extremely technically complex, one that will stand and fall by the quality of its visuals, so there\'s no point pulling the trigger before we\'re completely R+D\'d and prepped." Norrington didn\'t inform AICN of when exactly Ghost Rider might finally start filming.
