The President\'s Decision On Stem-Cell Research...
« on: August 18, 2001, 06:36:48 PM »
Well...George Bush has stated that he will not fund stem-cell research. He did, however, say that he will fund the research for all of the cells already taken out because they are already dead. Removing baby stem cells, he said, is like abortion, and he will not support it in any way.

They have already taken out millions of adult stem cells, and are continuing research on them.

The President\'s decision has upset both people from the scientific and religious sides.

I agree with his decision. I think it\'s wrong to destroy a human life just for stemcells. I also agree that there is no point in wasting the lives already destroyed. I have always doubted bush from the beginning but now I am beginning to like him.

Yup, he sat on the fence excellently. Research that will lead to prescribed cures for many ailments such as Alzheimers will take at least between 5-10 years. Did he address the cloning of stem cells?

The bottom line is that this research WILL continue somewhere in the world no matter what the US does. Could you imagine 8 years down the line if a multinational conglomerate based in China patented the cure to Alzheimers and charged rediculous amounts for it...that would be great. At least if this research was funded by the US gov\'t then the costs and distrubutions of these cures could be controlled fairly.

Well, I would like to think the people finding the cures for these diseases are doing it out of a passion to help people and not to improve their financial status. I would hope that they would make it as affordable as possible.

multinational conglomerate discovers 2 cures for cancer,

Cure 1:  Patient has to take pills for the rest of their lives. $$$
Cure 2: Patient takes 1 pill and is cured for life.

Which of the 2 cures would a huge company $$$ subscribe to? $$$ ;)

Right. The one that makes them the most money. I don\'t trust any of the big drug companies... they are not in it for humanity, just money. IMO.

Yes, and that\'s an important observation. I don\'t think companies should be allowed to get a patent on the human genome etc., because that information should be freely available - the same with cures for cancer and the like. It would be very bad if some big company got a cure which was very expensive... don\'t believe for a second they\'re shelling out billions of dollars in research out of their good heart. They\'re in it for the money.

Just add flavors like lemon, cherry and grape and you have a new product. You just take the cure and add a flavor. It technically is a new product. Correct me if I\'m wrong. I usually am.

Lets see, ok scientific research that has the potential to save millions of lives, or appease right wing christian amerika yet again?

Regardless of how much he says it was a fair compromise those stem cell lines will die out after a few years.  Yet again he proves that he is nothing but a bigot who\'s mind is closed off to progress just so he can save face in the eyes of the religious right.

If you need more proof one must look only to his 2 most controversial bills, the school voucher program and the faith based funding program.  With the voucher system schools that need the money (failing schools) will get the least ammount.  What is the alternative then, pack them into private schools run by religion and indoctrinate them there.

Now I have no problem with a church helping homeless people but damnit the "Church of Mickey Mouse" (which was just a scam to get out of paying taxes) is not going to get money from the govt. when a secular program would not.

Call me "just another paranoid Atheist" but when you live in the lower bible belt of amerika and have to take **** by people everyday who claim to be doing the work of god you get slightly bitter about the subject.

Well I don\'t think he\'s a bigot because he doesn\'t want to support abortion in any way.  There will be people who\'ll agree or disagree like always, but like always Americans are generally conservative.  Not funding stem cell research is no big surprise.

And as for that school issue, keep in mind that families who pay thousands to send their kid(s) to private schools already also pay thousands in tax dollars which eventually end up funding the public schools.  They may not believe in some of the things taught in public schools but are partly paying to keep them running anyway.  They already feel what you are feeling now.
