They are not un-grateful. They bought something and want top performance for what they spent money on, that is all.

Any ideas on what the best DVD player would be for a "normal" TV that\'s rather big, and would fit in a rather tight budget?  Me and my dad could probably convince my mom to let us spend $150 on one, so we want to make it count.  Any suggestions?

For entry-level, a Panasonic, Toshiba, or Pioneer is usually recomended.

The Panasonic RV-31k (RV-31s = silver model) can be found for $160 on the net.  It does CDR-audio, VCD, and mp3.

The Toshiba SD-1700 is your basic bare-bones DVD player but has the Toshiba name which is good quality for DVD playing.  It can be found for $140 on the net.

The Pioneer DV-343 can be found for $140.  It plays VCD and CDR-audio.  All Pioneers come standard with a twin-laser pickup for better compatibility with optical mediums.

I have a Toshiba myself, but I\'d recommend the Panasonic.

http://www.audioreview.com/reviews/DVD/index_S.shtml

Once you have a specific model you\'re considering buying, go to this site, and look it up before going any further.  People have posted literally hundreds of user reviews in some cases on the more popular models.  Many manufacturing defects are revealed if you read through the reviews.  I use this site quite heavily now.

Save for the fact that it will not recognize 95% of my DVD collection. Whats the point of a DVD player that is selective about the DVDs that it will read? I would rather get a PS2 game only machine than be forced to use the counter intuitive peice of ****e that I used before I got a second stand alone.

bozco, when you get older, you will learn what it feels like to earn the perks you buy yourself.

I am much poorer than these guys but I own over 300 games and over 15 different systems. It is my hobby, I find money to do it from whatever my check may be. It is like people living in the ghetto, yet they drive around in G-Ride caddies, wear the expensive clothing, have alot of \'ice\', etc, etc, etc. They work (or steal) or sell drugs for that stuff. It is what their priorities are. Who cares what they do with those welfare checks? Spend as you like, I say. Just don\'t make ME pay for it! get a job.

First off I want to answer the last question..
WhiteFleck There are a bunch of good DVD players you can get, stay within the brandnames and you should be fine..  Avoid stuff like RCA, and Walmart brands because they are only $90 bucks or something..  Spend $120 on a brandname one and you should get a decent player.

Now for the rest of you..  Don\'t worry about Bozco\'s remark, I don\'t want this thread turning ugly..  I understand where he is comming from..

And Bozco, I do appreciate what I have..  But like a lot of people were saying about hobbies is true..  I love high end stereo equipment and stuff of that nature..  Its what I spend a lot of my money on..  Im not rich by any big means.  I do have money, but I also work 9-5 m-f for my loot..    And spending it where I want is such a great priveledge.

I don\'t want people to judge because of how much money they have, I did not have money like this when I was younger, I came from some pretty bad places.  I have seen poverty at its worst.  And now, now I have a great job and a wonderfull family and I am going to enjoy the fruits of my labor..  Trust me, I appreciate what I have everyday I wake up..

I´ve 3 players: PC, PS2, and Sony standard. I think PS2 plays very well the DVDs but no as a expensive standard.
