PS2 goes from strength to strength
« on: October 12, 2001, 03:20:17 AM »
Total worldwide sales for PS2 have hit the 20 million mark now and sales have increased so much that production has now been upgraded to 1.8 million units being made per month.   4.6 million units have been sold in the UK alone.  Although Xbox and GC may sell well I think both machines have there work cut out to try and obtain as big a chunk of the market that the PS2 is occupying.  These figures are correct at time of writing.... I work for Sony BTW.

I\'ll second that.

BTW, since you work for Sony any idea how many of those 20 mil are on the shelves? You see Ihave this nagging feeling if the US price is lowered too soon there would be a shortage again. Any thoughts or inside dope on that?

I dont actually work directly with the PS2 side of Sony (thats consumer).  I work for the Broadcast part of Sony in Engalnd, but I do get info every now and then aswell as good discounts on all Sony gear:)   For Europe the main distribution of PS2 is in Holland, not England.

Heretic> The 20 million units is how many have actually been sold to the shops i.e. no longer on Sonys inventory.  Sony are expecting a sales increase and that is why production has been increased.  I very much doubt that there will be a shortage, although market forecasters can get it wrong.  I really wouldnt worry too much though as even if there was any shortage it would only be momentary.
