Question about DMC. How to increase life bar?

Question about DMC. How do you increase the life bar? I know it can be done, but I can\'t figure out how to do it for the life of me(no pun intended). I have found and collected about 8+ blue orbs, but once I find the 5th orb, it goes back to 0/4 in my item screen without increasing my life bar at all. I have done this about twice(finding 8+ blue orbs) . I have even bought a bunch of blue orbs in the power up screen. Did nothing. What in the bloody heck am I doing wrong?!?!?!? Help!!!! I could REALLY use the extra life!

There are whole Blue Orbs and 1/4 blue Orbs in the game

Each time you find a whole blue orb or make a whole one with 4 1/4 pieces your life bar automatically increases a little bit. Maybe a 1/2 inch at most
You can also buy whole blue Orbs but each time you buy a whole Blue Orb the next one is more expensive
