Niche? True, perhaps... But I wonder at the same time about just how much advertising $$$ Square put into this movie. The good Lord knows they put bucket-loads into developing it...but I live in Richmond, VA -- a city I won\'t consider exactly small...and just how much did I see this movie advertised on TV when it was heading to the big screen? Twice,...maybe three times. Sure, none of us can see every commercial; so its entirely possible that it played much more often than I was aware of...but the fact is, we have "tinny-bopper" movies that market their a$$es off and the kids and the parents have just flat-out got it in their faces.
This was a beautiful movie. A fine [yes, if sci-fi-cliched] story. Yet what was Star Wars as far as a story? Any less cliched? No. Beautiful? Well...we were in space with action like never before... Did I like it? Yes. Did it make toooooonnnnnnns of dough? Booyeaaaah! Did it get marketed to the hilt? Absolutely! How many other movies equate their success to cliche & marketing? Too many to count. And I say this b/c there was more to this failure than a cliche. There was more to its failure than "lips that don\'t move in-sync with speech". IMO, FF:TSW failed because it was not "fed" to the public in a way that they could appreciate it. Its hype was played on its technical advancements in CG...instead of on simply letting us recognize an up-and-coming sci-fi movie that we could simply enjoy as another enjoyable opportunity for entertainment.
Too bad. I hope the DVD sales improve its overall profits and open the opportunity for more such movies. I hope Square markets the DVD well!...but then again, as a gamer, I knew when it was coming out...did you see it marketed much through TV advertisments? Well? So, who knows its out there? I can\'t tell you how many folks I have to *ExPlAiN" this movie to -- by that I mean, that my responses received to, "Hey, have you seen FF:TSW?" are nothing short of "What? Never heard of it." Just sad...and now the DVD is out...and folks once again seem to be just as ignorant of its presence... Marketing, marketing, marketing.
