Silent Hill 2\'s twisted ways
« on: December 07, 2001, 07:25:12 AM »
This is for the Pal gamers who just bought SH2 since nov 20th;
Up to now, I have completed the game once, since it was released here in the Netherlands/Europe
on Tuesday the 20th (I believe..). I got the ‘Leave’ ending which isn’t a surprise because I examined
all items such as Angela’s knife and Mary’s diary. If you reply don\'t spoil the other endings please, okay ?
(by the way, as I am writing this I notice it’s very foggy outside....hmmm... really no kidding !)
What I want to discuss here is the part of the game where you get to the Silent Hill Historical Society
and from there on to the end.
I believe the player is being fooled here with clever use of both architecture and the alternate/evil modus of certain areas (of which the alternate Brookhaven Hospital was a small appetizer). In the game you are made believe the Prison and the Maze are situated under the Historical Society building. The 2nd
Graveyard, the Slaughterhouse (where James fights Eddie), and the dock where James takes the boat are all just behind the Historical Society building at the south end of Toluca lake, so you think ! WRONG !!
It is my (humble) opinion ,that from the point where James leaves the Prison basement, through that deep hole, up until the end of the game you are at least a mile UNDER Toluca lake !
Just figure ; in the Historical Society building you run down that strange hallway for 3 min. It really goes down. At that point James just might already be under Toluca lake. Then you go further down via the Well. On the ‘Well level’ James goes through the Prison. You head down to it’s basement. There you find the hole in some room. James goes futher and discovers the disposal hall of the dead bodies.
If you remember Rosewater park where James met Maria for the 1st time there was a memorial statue for the 67 ill people who died from a strange and fatal disease along time ago and who are burried beneath Toluca lake as a way of quarantine (did Mary somehow caught the same disease ?)
; I think those are the ill/dead ppl the statue mentioned. (maybe the 14 ppl from the boat which never returned ashore lie there as well)
It’s the part where James thinks; ‘This body in that hole ?’ So I think at that spot he’s pretty far beneath Toluca lake. Through that hole James gets to the elevator which goes down even further. There’s the Maze. I think the Maze takes James at over half the lake’s distance to north. From there on there’s again
a long walk/hallway down to the Slaughterhouse with Eddie in it. Exit  there and you think you find yourself still at the south end of Toluca lake at a docking bay with the boat. Wrong. Imo James travelled already about 75 percent of the way to Lakeview Hotel, a mile beneath Toluca lake : that’s of course the reason why it DOES NOT take long to reach the Lakeview Hotel shore by rowing boat. James just had to go only 25/20 percent of the distance by boat, to the Hotel.
Some ppl might argue the prison, the maze, graveyard and the slaughterhouse are all under/at the west side of the Historical Society building and not under the lake, but I it doesn’t fit because James has only gone down. From the maze you didn’t just pop to the graveyard at surface level. That doesn’t make sense. Plus, from the graveyard you go down again to the Slaughterhouse. These things explain why both the Prison execution yard and the graveyard (not the graveyard at the begin of the game !) are dark. It’s not because it’s nighttime, it’s because it’s underground.
If James reaches Lakeview hotel he is however still a mile under ground, not under Toluca lake anymore, but a mile under ground of the north end of Toluca lake shore. It’s only up until James watches the videotape in room 312 and then exits, that he realizes he was under ground all the time. That’s why the hallways and basement of the Hotel are flooded. I think the real Lake view Hotel went out of business a much longer time ago, that’s why this fake version is  underground, flooded and burned down. The truth lets James see the reality of the fake copy Lakeview hotel which is underground. After James beats the 2 Pyramid Heads he goes down the hallway into the shaft up via the zigzagging stairways. (who in the hell built all this ?!!!)
On top he finds Maria in the skeleton of the Real Lakeview hotel.
So I think James’ perception of Silent Hill was already fake. The town is in an even much futher state
of decay than it seemed. Brookhaven hospital is just a burned down skeleton building in reality and so is
the Lakeview hotel which at first seems just a year out of business, but is in fact much longer and in worse state of decay in reality. Imo Konami have played around with the time table:  death of Mary 3or 1 year ago and the tragic things which happened in Silent Hill from 1880 to 1935.
Now you...

when you get the other endings and firgure out a few more things you might come to the conclusion that I came too...

Every building that james is in only looks that way cause this is James\'s torture...its his hell and misery.

Meaning that ONLY james sees what he sees...like...James will see all these burnt down buildings and monsters roaming the streets where as Laura only sees an abondoned town.

I can\'t "really" get into it until you beat the otehr endings...

but very intresting points you brought up.

I consider the plot to Silent Hill 2 never ending, theres always something else that pops up in your mind that raises questions about whats going on... as for James being in his own living hell, I totally beleive it. Im not sure if any of you know but Im not gonna spoil it, James has his own certain[/COLOR] sins. The little girl being so little, doesnt have any sins... thereofre she roams the streets and buildings fearless and totally clueless of to whats going on except for what the deal is with James and Maria. The plot twists are truly amazing.

I consider this game a true master peice.
