Unmanned military aircraft
« on: December 07, 2001, 07:08:16 PM »
Does this scare anyone else ????

Boeing the company I work for has numerous unmanned military aircraft being designed tested and coming close to production ready

Sure there are alot of military advantages to unmanned craft, and I\'m sure Boeing isn\'t the only company in a hurry to make these kinds of war machines

but looing back at sci-fi films of the past and the bad guys almost always have the unmanned robots. The evil is usually the side that oppresses humanity or the associated race and has all these unmanned crafts

Here we are the USA, we\'re all proud as a nation we support the war on terror and yet we are possibly creating or have been creating the above scenario

My fear is that the day will come when  OUR governement will have an arsenal of unmanned machines at its disposal and since those machines are unmanned the nation wouldn\'t be able to stand up to an oppresive goverment because of obvious reasons.

or even furthering the fears is the AI we are developing. Sooner or later AI will be able to take control of everything override systems and gasp Learn "Self Preservation"

My fears are no longer the product of Science fiction, they are fears that have distinct possibilities. Granted they may not happen in my lifetime, but what about our childrens ????

as a race I truly believe we are heading for some terrible times. And all made possible by Capitalism.

How you ask

We all need money to buy houses, cars food, gas and everything else. So we work for Companies who need to meet a bottom line stay profitable by staying on top of technology and make superior products that people, other companies, and our/other Governments willl buy so the Stock will stay high and the company will thrive, which of course  creates high paying jobs that we all covet

It is Capitalism that is feeding technology that is breeding Superior war machines

and If we don\'t build these machines then another Country eventually will and we will be threatened so we need to build them 1st and better then the rest, and again the R+D of these machines and the eventual sales andproduction creates those jobs that allow us to buy all those things expected of Capitalistic Society

and we all buy into the need ofr these war machines cause we see the Terrorism and the Dictatorships that have risen and fallen causing Human misery, and we don\'t want  lose so we work harder donate more and prey for victory

The problem is the circle is feeding itself and its spiraling faster then we can control it. We are to busy trying to maintain a balance in our lives andmaintaining our schedules jobs families and so on we don\'t have the time to be bothered with stopping this circle or slowing it down.

I can go on on about this but I think you get the idea. What we thought could never happen is alot closer then we ever thought IMO

Food for thought

Good read ddaryl.

I have thought of this to some extent, but not this far.  I am worried about these unmannned air craft.  Using the wtc attacks as an example, the men in the planes at that time were willing to die for that cause but with this technology, men who are not willing to die would be able to create terror.  I know what i have said is different than what you were talking about but its just some of my thoughts

AI is a very mysterious and interesting topic to me.  If we have the technology to develop a machine or robot or whatever, that is intelligent and able to think on its own, if it has its own feelings and beliefs, thats is where it begins to freak me out.  Could you imagine if we created thousands of huge combat robots or something with extreme AI and all of the sudden they decided that they hated humans? that would be disastrous.

So i too believe that Man\'s end may be brought apon by man himself.

Good points D.

This reminds me of the Roman empire from ages past, only thing is that the technology sometimes explodes and lessen our humanity.  IMO.

These present/future "unmanned" vehicles/robots/airplanes
make it possible for any government in control of them to enforce any Law/or prosecute any action they deem necessary for their own survival.

Under such conditions, a dictatorship could spring from a democratic one.  If the populace does not agree with their dictator-run-government, what could they do?
Stage big rallies/protests? In that case an inhuman machine without morality, and with only obedience as its motivator would crush any opposition.  A human soldier in the same situation would think and feel, about how his actions might hurt the people around him, and his country, a machine won’t lose any sleep over its actions.

If the MD (Missile Defense) system for North America becomes a reality, it would protect any government retaining such a system from being attacked by countries such as: China, India, Pakistan, or any other nuke capable country.  After such a step, the only obstacle in a dictatorship would be the actual populace.

IMO.
