Playstation 2 price drop?

I have been saving up to finally purchase myself a playstation 2. A guy I work with said his wife(she works at walmart) heard that the price is going to go down to $199. Anyone else hear of this and if so any idea of when it may go down? I would hate to purchase one for $299 and it go down $100 the next day.

Welcome, Is the PS2 price droping?  Wow if it does thats a real good deal. You can play every thing right out of the box and have a great line of games.  

Nobody knows except for Sony.  I really don\'t have any idea when it will drop and what price it will drop to -- and that\'s considering it even drops at all.  They might just add a HDD and Modem and charge $300 for that.

If you bought a PS2 now and the price dropped within a month after that, most stores would give you the difference between the old price and the new price.  But if the price drops after you own your PS2 for a month, you might be stuck with an over payed for, possibly underequipped PS2...

I probably just scared you away from buying a PS2 for a few months, but that\'s all the info I know about it.

If you want my prediction though (READ: Usually wrong prediction) , I\'d say around E3 in May is when they\'ll announce the price drop or HDD+modem bundle.

Just buy it now man, its anyones guess on when the price will go down, but if they didn\'t lower it before christmas what company would, in its right mind, lower it now

like all the others rumors of SONY so called dropping prices when xbox and gamecube launched or when the holiday came..was there a price drop..no, its all rumors created by gamers and consumers like us.

so if SONY didnt drop it then, why drop it now ? if you know how marketing and strategy works..if you are going to drop a price, you drop it when you are in trouble, or to compete against your rivals.

and if you check the sales of PS2 games during the holidays...it did way better then the xbox and gc. so if the sales are still high even though you got 2 new consoles out, why drop the price when you can be making a profit ?

i am in good relations and connections with the SONY rep, and the XBOX rep..now only if the Nintendo rep would stop by the store..i can be in good relations with him as well.

also, SONY is releasing the multi-colored limited edition PS2s..what you think the price range is going to be for that ? $300? because the supposed price is dropping to $199-$250? i dont think so..that limited edition PS2 is going to be like $350-450.

so dont believe every info you hear..just like the supposed revised edition of GTA3. theres ONLY 1 version...and its the same version as when it was released. theres no edited version or kiddy verion...theres the explicit version ONLY!

back to the price drop...you wont see a price drop probably in the summer or during the next holiday season of 2002. so the ONLY time to believe theres a price drop is when it comes out of SONYs mouth

As from what I heard, Sony had increased ps2 production, manage to produce .18 micron chips instead of .25, and I am pretty sure ps2 price will drop because of that.  When?  I don\'t know.  But probably somewhere around this year.

I don\'t think they would drop the price a whole 100 dollars. Probably 30-50 dollars.

PS2 is selling more than the GC and xbox combined.  price drop?  why should they?

just because they are producing a cheaper chip means they should drop it ? what ALL companies see are greens [money]. thats all they care about, is profit. SONY is trying to regain the profit all those money they lost when it first launch. yes its cheaper to produce the PS2 now, but selling it for more then what they make it for is a (+) to them. when you are in business, i bet you and everyone else would be thinking about the same thing..profit!!

PROFIT = MORE MONEY
MORE MONEY = GOOD FOR COMPANY
GOOD FOR COMPANY = GOOD FOR SHAREHOLDERS/STOCKHOLDERS

i think that made sense. forgot how economy works..been awhile since i had economy class.

and like i said in my previous post..the ONLY and i mean ONLY time when a company is going to drop it is when:
1. the product isnt selling
2. to compete against competitors
3. when something is outdated and something new comes out
4. making enough profit that it wants to attract more users

as of now...SONY arent even in those 3/4 areas. SONY is competing, but they didnt drop the price during XBOX and GC launch so that makes SONY not in those 4 areas

Good point, Bandit, notice I said somewhere around this year.  Doesn\'t mean sony should drop it now.  It might be during fall or Christmas season which the ps2 is 2 years old in America by that time.  I guess the drop will be somewhere between $50 - $100.  

Anyway, if ps2 cost $200, then that\'s cheaper than GayCube, i mean Gamecube which cost the same but doesnt play dvd, audio cd, and not backward compatible with N64.  So if PS2 drop their price now, i think it will drop to $250 unless gaycube is selling cheaper than $200.  XBOX is the cheapest of the three.  Even the Japanese XBOX launch is cheaper than ps2 japanese launch.  One thing I like bill gates is that they doesnt fear of losing a lot of money.  They makes xbox very powerful, lot of RAM, fast polygon counts, faster pixel fill rate than gaycube or playstation 2.  Only thing is the pentium 3 733mhz isn\'t half faster than ps2 300mhz which equal twice the speed of pentium 3 733mhz. ps2 also has more floating points than xbox.  i could go on about pros and cons.  But in my eyes, xbox is the cheapest, ps2 comes second, and nintendo doesn\'t seems to lose any money selling the gaycube because it doesn\'t have stuff like built in harddrive, network adapter like xbox, or even a dvd player.  The gaycube with dvd player will cost $300.  Gaycube is like crap!

you think its crap cuz its probably because its a \'kiddy\' system right ? or because you hate Nintendo. its always either one of the two or both. just because its not as powerful or have a dvd like the xbox doesnt mean its crap...look at the Resident Evil remake, that game looks HOT !!!!. knowing you, or anyone else, you\'ll say \'eh :\\, its OK\'
