Official press release from Square Japan...

Square Chief Stresses Loyalty To PlayStation 2

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Game software developer Square Co. (9620) has decided to resume supplying software to Nintendo Co. (7974) through an affiliate yet to be established.

Explaining the decision, Square President Yoichi Wada said in an interview with The Nikkei Business Daily that the company had not switched loyalties from Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. to Nintendo. He said it was natural for Square to deal with Nintendo again as long as both sides benefit.

At the same time, Wada said that Square will not change its stance toward SCE, and will make software development for SCE\'s PlayStation 2 game console its first priority. "All of our assets, including programmers and equipment, will continue to be devoted to developing game software for SCE, just like they have been," Wada said.

Wada said the company\'s decision to resume dealings with Nintendo will actually help SCE, which has already benefited from a 50-70% surge in the value of Square shares it purchased last October.

As for development funds which Square\'s planned affiliate will receive from Fund Q, a fund set up by the Nintendo president, the deal was essentially conducted by Akitoshi Kawazu, a Square director, Wada said. The fund will have nothing to do with the software to be supplied to Nintendo, Wada added.

Square has yet to decide whether it will produce the popular "Final Fantasy" video game software for Nintendo\'s GameCube, according to Wada. Even if there is a Nintendo version of Final Fantasy, it will not be made by Square itself but by the new affiliate. He also said the content of the game would be completely different from the Final Fantasy for PS2.

So basically...

  • Square is focusing on PS2
  • Square has not commited to releasing a FF game yet for GC
  • If they commit to a FF game, it will not be developed internally at square

... Bah!

Why wont they just release a damn FF game on the GCN?! Its not like it wont profitable. And it doesn\'t have to be any one of the main FF games. People are dying for a sequel to Final Fantasy Tactics.

Last I heard it was:

FFXI starts on PS2, then gos to PC

FFXII stays on PS2

Older FF titles show up on GBA.

That was from several sources, but that doesn\'t mean that Square has to stick to the original plans.

Something like that. I\'d just like to see what talented developers like Square could do with the GCN. I\'m just curious is all. :)
