According to an article in the Croatian magazine PC Ekspert, mentioned in the enquirer.net, a simple screensaver can toast a GF FX 5800 Ultra board, causing it to reach temperatures of 95-100 degrees Celsius. nVidia have been made aware of this issue and are working on some solution.

The problem, apparently arises when running full versions of 3D screensavers, which the card does not recognize as 3D utilities therefore causing the cooling fan to stop functioning. According to the staff at PC Ekspert, any 3D screensaver will do even Windows\' own 3D Pipes but a more powerful one is needed if you are in a hurry to get your board hot. As soon as the screensaver launches the fan starts working but 5 to 10 seconds later it stops. Within a few minutes the card will reach 95-100 Celsius, also causing some distortion on the screen.
Croteam, Croatian games developers of Serious Sam fame, also managed to replicate these findings even when using an nVidia reference board they received from nVidia Developer Relations.

Don\'t know wtf nvidia are doing, but this sorta sh#t shouldn\'t happen to begin with. ATI is looking better every day.

nivida have really screwed up this time, first people have to wait for this so called mother of all graphics cards and it then turns out to be barely on par with ati\'s R9700.
its got like what, twice the clock frequencies of the R9700 (well twice is over exagerrating). and now with ati releasing the R9800 i dont think nvidia is gonna stand a chance this time around.

Yep mm, because they’re relying on the gf4 series of cards. As it sits now, Nvidia are losing lots of userbase. If they don\'t pick up their game. ATI will lead the market base soon enough. So if nvidia continue to screw up. People in 1 to 2 years will be buying ATI’s \'will be then\' cheap 9700 cards as well as ATI’s newer cards. People won\'t be buying the cheap FX cards that overheat/fry. Just like people don\'t tend to buy AMD\'s old cpus that overheat and fry.

Good idea! I got away from Nvidia once my video card mesed up my PC, drivers were bad and corrupted my HD..I had WINDOWS ME at the time.....

Ugh Win ME... seriously though, ATI is pretty good and Nvidia is starting to drop the ball a bit. Nvidia even pulled out of being a beta sponsor for 3DMark03 due to Nvidia\'s feeling the test wasn\'t fair.

What really ticks me off is their GeForce4 MX cards that are really GeForce2\'s with a new name.

The 5900 Ultra rocks; beating the 9800pro in most benchmarks(especially with antialiasing+anisotropic filtering at higher resolutions). Nvidia finally got it right; but it might be too late this time, we\'ll see.

ATI finally made a mistake this gen with the 9800pro 256. Moving from 128 to 256megs of memory with the same 256bit memory bus = little to no performance gain. Plus they moved to DDRII wich ofcourse is more expensive. Surely a card I will stay away from.
