Quote
Bryan Dawson: It\'s just getting ready to start now. A montage is being shown with all their games, like the new Syphon Filter, Final Fantasy X-2, Gran Turismo 4, and other games.

Kaz Harai, COO of Sony has taken the stage.

Harai is describing inventions such as the telephone, the phonograph, the television, and the video game console. Now, he is discussing the PlayStation, and how it has really tapped into the

As of 22.21 million PlayStation 2 in America, 12.7 million in Japan, and 16.29 million in Europe shipped as of April 1. Software has sold 162 mil in NA, 103 mil in EU, 85 mil in Japan. They expect another 250 titles coming out this year for PS2.

The console war was over in 2002" - Kaz Harai, COO of Sony Computer Entertainment America

He\'s now discussing the new PS2 focus: content, hardware evolution, community, and market expansion.

Content: he\'s discussing how Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts sold huge.

Metal Gear Solid 3 is PlayStation 2 exclusive. Now he\'s talking about the GTA series, selling 17 million units worldwide.

The next GTA is exclusive to PS2.

Jak and Daxter, SOCOM, Ratchet and Clank, and other games were million sellers in the USA. Now, a new franchise, Rise to Honor starring Jet Li. He is helping with the mocap on the game and they have implemented a 360-degree fighting engine. Let\'s take a quick look at that.

-- Rise to Honor video playing --

Looks pretty fluid. It\'s made to play like a Hong Kong action movie. It looks like The Bouncer, only a lot better. It looks like it\'s from a Jet Li movie, and the animation is very smooth. You can attack people from any angle, multiple people at once. The graphics look okay, but the animation is fantastic.

Gran Turismo is the most successful franchise in our console\'s history. GT3 sold over 11 million units worldwide.

-- Gran Turismo history video --

They\'re showing a video of previous GT games. Nothing on GT4 yet, but they\'re showing all the older ones right now.

Now the president of Polyphony has come out to introduce Gran Turismo 4.

He is explaining how GT4 is being made with the same care as other GT games in the series. They\'re about to show video of real world locations they went to for the making of Gran Turismo 4.

-- GT4 Location Video Playing --

They\'re showing Paris and other cities. They\'re showing real world photos. Now they\'re showing a bit of in-game.

Now they\'re showing something. I can\'t really tell if it\'s CG or a realtime. If this is realtime, it looks flawless. It looks flawless, you can\'t tell what\'s real and what\'s game. This looks photo-realistic.

Online gameplay is confirmed for GT4. Also, revamped engines, AI, they\'re doing a major upgrade to the engine. Driving will be improved.

AI will feel more human, they are upgrading the AI for the first time in the series.

There will be more cars in this game than in any other GT game before it. The idea is to reimagine the history of cars.

They will also have more real-world circuits from around the world. They don\'t have details on online play, but you will be able to enjoy GT4 online. GT4 will be playable at E3.

-- more GT4 video --

This looks real. It looks photorealistic. This is amazing, I can\'t tell if it\'s real or not. I\'m seeing regular courses, off road courses, GT4 "The Real Racing Simulation."

Now it\'s time for hardware...

They have announced a PS2 bundle with the network adapter. It is called the PS2 Online Pack. It will be available to all new consumers starting from June, and they will have out-of-the-box online play.

New features will include progressive scan for DVDs, DVD-R playback, built-in remote sensor, and more. The price for this is $199.

Now, they are showing off the digital camera. It\'s called the EyeToy. The camera is USB, looks like a Webcam, but it has the PS2 look to it. It fits in the pam of your hand, and all you have to do is focus manually. It also utilizes motion capture technology and you can see yourself on the screen. This is developed by Sony. It will interact with gameplay, your movements will be translated into gameplay.

They\'re showing it now. This is cool. There\'s a button on the screen, and you can press it with your hand. Now they\'re showing off Kung Fu, and it\'s showing the guy on screen with everything around him. The enemies are jumping at him, but he\'s knocking them all down with his fists. It also shows you where to stand.

Now they\'re showing Wishy Washy, a window washing game. This looks very Japanese. You\'re behind a dirty window, you have to clean the dirty window, and you just use your hands to clean the window. This really looks very Japanese. Now they\'re showing two people playing. It seems up to 4 people can play on one cam. It\'s USB, $39.99 and will ship with 12 games in October.

They\'re discussing video conferencing, virtual navigation, virtual pen applications, things of the like with this. Out of the box you can tape video messages up to a minute on your memory card. Very minor lag with this camera.

Now he\'s talking about online goals, and the fact that PS2 is not trying to compete with the PC. That it\'s its own experience.

To this date, we have more than 600K network adapters in North America alone. 30% of SOCOM users are online, and SOCOM has sold more than 1 million units. There are 13K people online at once, and 60K play daily, SOCOM alone.

58% of PS2 online users are broadband, 42% are dialup. There is more people on broadband, but still a lot of people want to connect through dialup.

Now discussing online games...

Syphon Filter and SOCOM 2 are both online. SOCOM 2 is October, Syphon is February 2004.

FF XI... you can play via PC or PS2, SCEA will publish the North American version, and now we will see a video of FF XI.

-- FF XI video playing --

It looks like FF X. CG is looking good. They didn\'t show any actual gameplay, just CG for FF XI.

Now they\'re talking about EA Sports. All of their online sports games will be exclusive to the PS2. The online versions are exclusive to PS2, the offline versions will still make the rounds. There will also be realtime stats and tournaments through this.

John Riccitello, President of EA, taking the stage.

There will be an EA Sports Talk voice chat system where you can trash talk with the gamers as if they\'re sitting next to you.

We\'re looking at Madden being played online right now. No lag at all, looks a lot more fluid than 2003. Not much difference from that version, though. I saw just a bit of lag there, but only for half a second. Very little lag here and there.

Now going to NBA Live. This is actually looking very good. It almost looks like a real game. The animation looks good, not seeing any lag at all. This looks better than NBA2K3 did last year. Not saying this is better, but it looks better.

Nascar 2004 will also be online. No lag at all, and it looks great. He\'s playing someone in San Francisco... oof, huge wreck. No slowdown, no lag. Nice speed with no lag at all.

NCAA Football 2004... again, very little lag at all here. Looks just like last year, but very smooth. He\'s talking back and forth with a guy from Texas who he\'s playing. Very little lag as they play.

He\'s now playing someone in FIFA 2004, someone from British Columbia, and it\'s looking really great from an online standpoint.

Onto Tiger Woods... it looks like they have Tiger onscreen here. Tiger Woods is onscreen from Orlando, live, to play. Live here, you have Cedric the Entertainer to play against Tiger. The trash talking is all over the place.

-- lots of laughter as trash talking goes back and forth --

Now they\'re playing Tiger Woods 2004, and they\'re still getting on each other. No delay, no lag while playing this game. It looks great, the water splashing on shore and all. Cedric did a fake swing... now he just ran up and hit it.

-- lots of laughter --

Tiger looks like he overshot the green. Oh, Tiger just shot it right near the hole. The game looks like last year\'s version, but the online play looks flawless. They\'re getting ready to putt now.

More trash talking, more laughter. Cedric is actually on the screen as a character, not sure how they managed that, but he hit his putt and started dancing.

Tiger missed his putt, and Cedric just beat Tiger Woods in Tiger Woods\' game.

-- lots of laughter and applause --

EA Sports Online starts July of this year.

-- EA Sports Online video --

They\'re just recapping all the online games, it looks like all their sports games, including NHL 2004.

Now they\'ll talk about the market expansion...

The father of the PlayStation, Ken Kutaragi, is here to talk about market expansion. He just took the stage.

Now... a new baby in the family... not PlayStation 3.

A new handlheld entertainment platform! PSP - PlayStation Portable.

This system uses a mini CD, fits in the palm of your hand. It looks like a mini disc with the outer casing - UMD - universal media disc. 2.4" diameter, 1.8 gigs storage

It will have an anti-piracy... it will also use MPEG 4, widescreen LCD 16:9 screen, backlit, can do 3D polygons and curved surfaces. 480 x 232 pixels, 4.5" unit.

Digital sound... ATRAC audio technology for 3D sound. 32-bit processing. Similar to PlayStation with a 32-bit core. It has a USB port, and you can hook it up with the PS2.

There is wireless communication and things like GPS, it will have a rechageable battery, and more.

They\'re calling it the Walkman of the 21st century. They haven\'t showed it yet.

Most? I don\'t think so. Mine works perfectly, despite the two drops it took.

Is it goin\' to have three great CastleVania games? Even one? If not - count me out..Now, on the other hand, if Konami makes some 2D CastleVania\'s for it, I\'ll be there in a heart beat.
