Does PSP have a chance?
« on: June 02, 2003, 10:51:19 AM »
First off, if you\'re like me you think Paint Shop Pro.  But not for long if Sony has its way.  The PlayStation Portable (I think that\'s the other P) is basically a multi-media discman that can play games.

They talked about it at E3, and I wonder if this thing has a chance.  Honestly, I\'m so interested in seeing Nintendo get a stranglehold with its GBA and GBA SP, I don\'t want it to happen.

You might say competition is good, but the GBA is largely what helps Nintendo compete in the first place.  Nevermind the fact that 3D portable gaming from Sony could effectively destroy the 2D gaming scene.  (Unless stuff like Capcom\'s next Mega Man game makes a splash.)

At this point, I also hope we\'ve all written off the N-Gage as any kind of gaming platform.  But what if this PSP comes to fruition?

I sincerely hope PSP will be able to compete. Nintendo has had monopoly in this market for too long. Kinda like Microsoft has had with OS, and the quality of the products are not as good as they could\'ve been with some good competition. Competition is good in my book.

I heard that it shares some of it\'s technology with the ps2, which would make it very powerful for a handheld.

Price is going to be a big factor for this handheld, in my opinion.

With all the proposed options and technology, it\'ll be double the cost of a GBA SP, at least.

I don\'t know about you guys, but I won\'t buy one if it costs that much.  Portable gaming isn\'t that important to me, and if it was, I\'d buy 6 or 8 GBA SP games with the same money.

While first party originality I question, I otherwise don\'t have a problem with the quality of the current handheld generation.  The Metroids, Castlevanias, Golden Suns, Advance Wars, and more are revolutionizing handheld gaming.

Before now, if it wasn\'t a puzzle game, I probably wasn\'t interested.

True. I won\'t buy it if it\'s more expensive than the GBA SP either.

I\'m feeling rather indifferent right now..

Personally, I wouldn\'t buy such a handheld unless it had stellar games. If I were to buy a gaming product from Sony, it\'d most likely be a PS2 or PS3.. \'nuff said. I must say that PSP\'s multiple uses intrigue me..

Price is goin\' to be the first and foremost issue. If they can get it around the hundred dollar or less range, then they will be able to sell some.

Second, how long is the battery life? With all they are promising it, it would seem that the battery life will be extremely limited.

Finally, what game\'s can we expect? No one can argue that Nintendo has a bunch of first and third party quality titles for the GBA. Hell, oe only needs to look at the Mario , Advance Wars and CastleVania series that has been eating up the sells charts .

I am hopin\' that Sony doesn\'t make the mistake of demanding developers to make 3D games for the PSP , as they did when the original PS was released. There is something to be said for quality 2D titles.

I own a GBA and they are impressive but as I read the Spec for the PSP in PSW Magazine,it looks and sounds better than the GBA and it just depends on the titles not the price for me.
will they just do classics like Nintendo have done with the Mario advance games?
