Spudz, it wasn\'t worth it.. No Divx, svcd, vcd support. You got ripped off good.

Even though it says it supports VCD, i don\'t see how when it can\'t read CDR. CDRW etc.

lol, those aren\'t what make a DVD player good!  To me a $700 player says DVD-A, SACD, kick ass brushed aluminum body, DCDi Faroudja de-interlacer, and some other cool crap.

The sub-$200 players are the ones that come with things like svcd, divx.  People who can afford to grab an expensive player don\'t wanna fool with VCDs and divx\'s.

Rich people don\'t need divx on DVD.  They need something that\'s name brand, great quality, and will last over several years. I bet the Toshiba\'s chipset decodes mpeg-2 better and it\'ll take longer for it to crap out.  But don\'t worry, I don\'t think it\'s worth $700 either. ;)

but for 700 bucks.. and i\'m guessin your talking USD. Which means its worth around 1700 bucks. That\'s a HUGE rip off.

That\'s like buying a DELL computer.. Brand names, pffffft.
Why pay so much for a "better" chipset, that will last longer when it will become outdated in a few years anyway.

DVD player to buy...hmmm...how about one that does this:

SACD
DVD-A
DVD-V
these three above are consider universal dvd player.
Other codecs: WM9, MP3, VCD, SVCD.
progressive scan- Faroudja DCDi.  No chroma bug, flagship 3-2 pulldown, 2-2 pulldown.  540 lines of resolution, no ringing....blah and blah.
Firewire digital connection for DVD-A and SACD digital transfer to receiver with 5.1 MLP and DSD decoder.
this is consider a universal dvd player.  thx is a rather knowledgeable about this.
Anyway, being a cheap person i am, i want this player at $250.

If you care about picture quality, then I don\'t suggest the el cheapo models, even if they have every feature in the book. I\'d rather trade features for picture quality than vice versa. Besides, I don\'t need divx support etc. because I watch DVD\'s, not rips.

Soully, rich people also would have a home pc hooked up to their monitors as well.  SO there would be no reason to burn a movie to disc and play with the player. Just run it straight off the hard drive.

I personally don\'t care about divx support.  My main concern is DVI output.

and Spudz, you could have bought a Bravo D1 for 200 bucks.  Bad ass player that does a hell of a lot more.  Only thing is you\'d have to get up to change discs half way through lord of the rings.

I\'m still using a Panasonic DVD-A360 from about five years back, to replace it with a model containing all the features I want would cost about $1000 so I just hope the old faithful keeps going.

Still beats seven shades of crap out of most opposition, I had 10 DVD player\'s from around our house including PS2, xBox and Toshiba gear all running through my setup and the Panasonic destroyed all of them (and they\'re all at least 2 years newer). The picture and sound were better than the el-cheapo players, PS2 and xBox and the sound was far in excess of anything the high end Tosh could do, creating a lovely ambience without blowing my tweeters up or popping my windows out of the frames!

I\'d buy Panasonic DVD players before anything else.

Actually I am Paul2, there another member in this forum that is Paul and that\'s not me.
The list about the universal I make was my dream dvd player.   I don\'t think there are a player of my expectation, at least not in $250 price range.

The Universal Pioneer cost $250, but the progressive scan playback is still questionable, i found the old discontinued panasonic rp-82 rules in dvd video playback.  Pioneer $250 does play DVD-A and SACD, but the analog output DACs quality not going to compare to one costing more.  And it doesn\'t have firewire output for receiver.
I think DVI is a good option, but i could care less.  As long as the dvd player give great DVD video performance, DVI isn\'t important.  I think it would be a while before we get more competition in universal dvd players.

Maybe I didnt list all the features it has- because what makes it so great for 700 bucks? He guaranteed us. That little ****ing dickhead.

Can someone else find a complete list of features?
