LOTR: TTT in High-Def
« on: January 11, 2004, 11:14:39 PM »
With all the DVD threads popping up I thought I\'d share an example of the next generation of home entertainment after DVD.  This is part of the battle scene in the Two Towers in HD.  Just 3 things you need to know:

1) Please don\'t link this in other forums.  My bandwidth is limited so keeping it a PSX2C exclusive is ideal, lotsa tech heads here anyway.  If it turns out alright I can post some more.

2) You can play back this video in WinDVD or VideoLan (freeware).  I\'d recommend the latter because it\'s less of a CPU hog.

3) You may need a decent PC to play this smoothly.  Runs fine on a p2.4.

Impressive stuff.  Now, where did you pull the source material from?  Is this somewhere on the TT DVD or something?  Is this similar to that WM9 codec stuff on the T2 Extreme DVD?  From what I understand, this is far LESS CPU intensive whereas the T2 DVD requires something like a P4 2.53 to run smoothly MOST of the time.  That\'s what I understand anyways.
Don\'t you ever touch my cape.

It\'s from satellite, either DirecTV or Dish Network.  They show movies in HD if you pay a little extra for the channels.  You can buy PC cards that can capture the bitstream to computer, so there\'s no capture/conversion involved (WYSIWYG).  These aren\'t my captures, I had an HD card at one point but not satellte, meaning I could only receive OTA (over the air) signals, such as NBC, ABC, CBS, etc...  I live in an area with high trees so my indoor antennas wouldn\'t cut it.  I had to install a tall outdoor one to get a stable signal, don\'t wanna do that since I\'m about to move.

Note: this is mpeg-2, this means::

- high-bitrate mpeg-2 is easier to play on a puter than a complex mp4 movie

- file sizes are BIG, the guy who capped the whole movie has HD space to spare

Looks great but it would look even better with less space using mpeg-4/wm9.  Problem is we would probably need faster hardware, hence why WM9 movies bog the CPU but use much less space.  Also very important is that this is 720p.  1080i looks sharper but you need to deinterlace, and that also kills the CPU.

Next up: Diva singing in 5th Element ;)

Download keeps going dead.

HD movies are tasty.  Have had HBO for a couple years now.

HD is very nice. Then again so was laserdisc. Hopefully they get the prices down quick on HD so perhaps we will move beyond DVD.

Very cool.  I love the HD terminator 3 movie examples on the WM9 media site too.  Makes you drool for the HD that\'s gotta be just around the corner.

BTW - nice server, I\'m got it at over 150k - always a good sign :p
