Windows kind of freezes at startup

when I start up everything goes fine except the tray icons don\'t load, and the second I click on anything the comp freezes like it\'s using all it\'s resources.  I can still move my mouse but can\'t click on anything.  Then after 2-3 minutes the welcoms note plays, the tray icons load and all is well.  I asume it\'s trying to find something or configure something on startup.  I already deleted the registry that makes XP search the schedualed task folder, but didn\'t help.  Any ideas?

Sounds like Its your NIC looking for a DHCP server (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol).
You have to enter a IP in your local area connection settings under network connections. Click on "Internet Protocols (TCP/IP) and click on properties. Then click on "Use the Following Ip address" Enter 192.168.0.1  leave the subnet mask on 255.255.255.0 and click ok.. Reboot your machine.
That should solve the little pause problem.
