Soundblaster Audigy 2 - Dolby 5.1 question
« on: April 20, 2004, 01:45:36 PM »
This might seem like a really dumbass question, but here goes. I have got a sony dts amp with one optical input (it also has a didital coax input) The optical in is being used by my xbox, is there a way to get 5.1 surr-sound from my pc without having to change leads all the time. I have the above mentioned soundcard! Thanks in advance

get something with more optical input jacks

might not be worth spending the cash to just switch one cable

Agree\'d. In today\'s world you really need something with more than one optical input. I am faced with the same problem, as my current receiver only has one OP input.

don\'t all the audigy\'s come with both an optical and a coaxial (S/PDIF in the computer world)?  Coax is the cable of choice by enthusiasts if quality is your concern.  Either use coax, buy an optical switcher, or a new receiver.

You\'ll only get 5.1 from software encoded in AC3 too. Most pc games use 3 separate pcm signals. A few pc games support AC3 as well as your dvd movies. :)

soul isn\'t the NVIDIA soundstorm or NFORCE boards the only DSP that encodes DD 5.1 on the fly for games?

SoundStorm is part of the MCP-T chipset on Nforce2 boards.  Atm its the only type of APU that encodes AC3 on the fly (in realtime) Not sure if they have anything like that in Nforce3 boards.  I know Nvidia are bringing out their own sound card that does support DD encoding in realtime.
