Never before has artificial intelligence been taken so seriously by developers and rightly so. AI promises to increase levels of entertainmentby making non-player characters smarter and more believable. Not to mention that AI techniques have the potential to reduce development times drastically.This talk is a review of AI technology in games: past, present and future.It starts with a history of game AI, and presents the background of academic AI techniques. This provides areference to analyse ground-breaking AI systems from recent games. Then, based on these recenttrends, the lecture speculates about the future state-of-the-art in AI programming. Finally, expecta discussion of the skills and methods necessary to develop game AI over the next few years andbeyond.Refreshments available. All welcome.
