22.5M PAL PS2\'s is quite a number.  Only bad part is that some have to play at weird framerates or whatever the deal is over there.

Is that really a problem anymore or does everyone have TVs that can do 60Hz?

Fortunately, the days that PAL was only 50hz are over. Most Europeans have PAL tv\'s that can do up to 100hz nowadays.
The majority of PAL PS2 games support PAL60. Add onto that
the crispy Euro AV RGB = very nice quality.

But, yes... alot of the times... conversions from other regions to PAL take longer than they should. Especially with story driven games like Metal Gear ; German, French, Italian, Dutch and other translations or dubbing ... now THAT kind of stuff should\'ve gotten rid of imo, for sake of worlwide simultanious release dates.

Bad ports is what plagues Europe.. (See DMC or FFX for reference). :(

If the port is a good one there is no difference in speed, but we lack 10Hz, instead we gain resolution.

Most TVs support 60Hz, but its up to the developers to see that their games support it.

So does mine via Xploder’s cheat disc, which has a nifty game accelerator mode which boots all PAL games to full speed 60hz :D no more  nasty black borders for me. :D

I can play poor converted games in 60Hz thanks to Action Replay MAX.

Datel does what Capcom/Square dont. :p

EDIT: But the code gave DMC a display error.. I must try FFX and TTT.

I forgot. What do the Japanese play on? Because there are the US and Pal regions so what do they call the Japanese ones?

The Japanese use NTSC like the US.

On the US boxart it says "NTSC U/C" and on the Japanese "NTSC J", so Japanese games will not work on a US system and vice versa.

The Japanese NTSC is based on the U. S. except its a bit more "modernize".

The U. S. NTSC still haven\'t changed some of the things yet like:

they still uses 7.5 IRE for black level whereas Japan had had switch to 0 IRE for black from a scale of 0 - 100 IRE.  Where 100 IRE is completely white.

The color gamut, not sure if  U. S. had modernized the color gamut with the color temperature of 6500k and color decoder yet, but I believed Japan had.

besides that, both have the same resolution of E. I. A. 525 lines interlaced (about 480 lines active) of 60 Hz.

PAL, although uses higher resolution, about 600ish and about 576 active interlaced lines of 50 Hz.  I think PAL had the accurate 0 - 100 IRE of black and white level long time ago and their color temperature is 6500k and their color gamut is pretty darn close to what HDTV uses for color gamut.

So, to sum it up, PAL have a higher resolution while NTSC have refresh rate.  Which is better?  The better question is, which do you prefer?  I prefer NTSC 60 Hz over PAL higher resolution.

Australia being part of Europe screws us around... We are closer (geographically) to both Japan and USA, so I wish they\'d change the format... plus 2.3 mill PS2 have been sold here, quite a bit.

Racer, 2.3 million units been sold in Australia is quite an amount compare that Australia population is about 20 millions.

Paul, 2.3 mill is the last official count I heard. I am pretty much so positive it was out of the AOPSM2.

May have been PS1 AND PS2 sales, however I remember PS2 sales hit 1 mill in Australia about 2 Christmas\'s ago, so 2.3 isn\'t that unbelieveable

THX - Australia is classed as part of Europe with games.

you misread what I am trying to say.  let me rephrase it a little.

2.3 million units been sold in Australia is a "high amount" compare that Australia population is about 20 millions.

There, happy now?  its much better than how it sell in China I believe where there are chances of pirating nad stuff.
