Apple\'s new 30" & other LCDs
« on: July 01, 2004, 04:57:07 PM »
crikey man Apple\'s got the right idea here, making widescreen the standard.  The 30" requires *two* DVI connections to transfer a resolution of 2560 x 1600.

Shit and I keep thinking my 17 inch monitor is massive.
Who is this anamoly we call Jumpman? How is he able to do what he does and still survive after years of torment? It seems he feeds on the hate, growing with an intense passion to put unassuming members in their place.

Yeah, I saw those at an Apple store. Looked pretty good considering they had one running behind store window where sunlight beams came in. The picture quality seemed nearly unaffected and the quality itself was real easy to the eyes.

This still nowhere makes me want to buy an Apple computer.

I\'ve worked on Apple computers with Cinema4D and Photoshop, through my academy years and at work ; performance is imo just
not really impressive for what the cost.

A G4 Cube at work is about the same or even slower than the old internet pc i\'m typing on right now , a PIII 667. The G4 Cube\'s 17 inch Studio Display is ok though.

Funny story though ; at work my boss has these cheap Dell 2350\'s with Intel 845 integrated graphics chip. It runs C4D R8 fine/ok, just as long as you keep poly count to medium and work in isoparm display mode or wireframe and do no fancy fx like particles, meta balls or volumetric lighting etc.

Then a friend of one of my collegues came over after work time ; i promised to help her a bit on a c4d schoolproject. Then I saw she had this Apple G4 ibook. I was like   wow ! a wealthy student ! anyway, she started c4d on that ibook and it became quite clear to me why she hadn\'t made that much progress yet ; a couple ( 6 or sumthin ) simple bspline chairmodels made that G4 ibook crawl :o  Sluggish was a true understatement. Now, at the apple site i saw it comes with Ati\'s Mobility9200 chip.... but i never expected the G4 (G4 ! for G\'s sake !  ) to perform so dreadfull on simple 4 unshaded cinema4d viewports. And c4d is known as quite a light and no problems 3D app. Man ! the crappy old Dell with intergrated graphics beating the 3D sh1t out of that fancy ibook. LOL. I know my boss is an Apple fan. His wife too. she runs a small video production company. she uses Macs only.

I\'ll stick to pc though. A friend of mine is gonna buy my QuadroFX1000 3D workstation card for € 550,- . That\'s about 668 USD. I\'m still in a bit doubt what to replace it with. I know the 6800 GT and x800xt pe are fast but i haven\'t read anything yet on how stable they perform in Maya or C4D....so , i\'m leaning towards the QuadroFX3000 ..... and i\'m NOT gonna replace my 19" CRT heheh !

Well every Mac you mentioned has been a low end machine, never a high end one.

Thats what I\'m talking about. I bet the Mac gamers can\'t wait to fire up the latest Mac games on that thing. What are they playing now? Warcraft? Command & Conquer?
I\'m sorry, That\'s not a hair question.

Well, I\'m sorry but those are the Macs with which I have afforementioned kind of expierence. Yes, I\'d wish it had
been better, but those are the cold facts of realworld G4 performance. My PIII 667 mhz isn\'t exactly state of the
art either but it does better job at both Photoshop 6 and
Cinema4D 7 and 8.

....And in the time when they were the newest of newest, C4D
and PSD weren\'t that much different. There was a heated
thread at CGtalk.com about the new PowerMac G5.
Major point ; weak support for dedicated 3D graphics. Standard cards are GeforceFX5200 or Radeon 9800XT. The 5200 is the bottom of the barrel
and the 9800 is indeed great value for money, but Ati cards
are known to act really buggy when you wanna work in Maya....

( although i have to say that in 2000, when i was in internship, the company i worked for had the old G3\'s and for that time they were pretty good, nice to work with. Most of the time there I worked on SGI O2\'s or Indy\'s in Maya 2. Those machines where then already a bit old, but still very good performance. )

My first computer was a mac and at my school we had macs but ive been on pc\'s for so long that i have fogotten many things about them. That and the new ones are fairly different than my performas and IIe\'s:laughing: .

I think Mac\'s are pretty impressive in their own ways, and the way they cater to the person is nice. Especially from a design point of view. All in all i prefer pc\'s by far but i wouldnt go as far to knock Macs.

After all. MS (which basically structured part of the modern pc and how we use it) was made off of Apple/Mac.
