Disc or System?
« on: October 09, 2004, 09:02:33 AM »
Maybe some of you expert types will have some advice for me.

I don\'t know if I have a glitchy game or broken PS2.

Def Jam: Fight for NY plays fine on my PS2. It\'s on a DVD, which I sometimes have trouble with when watching movies.

The problem is that, even though it loads and I can do different things, the second I try to laod a match, it freezes.

I tried the laser adjustment for disc read errors but it hasn\'t helped.

I also notice the game has a small smudge on it that I can\'t get to come off. Maybe that\'s all it takes to throw off the laser when it\'s on a DVD, and that might also explain why it plays until it tries to access what\'s under that smudge (loading a match?).

That\'s my best guess, but I wonder if you guys think I need to exchange the game or replace the PS2. I\'m probably going to try the exchange since I still have the receipt.

i\'d say exchange it..if your other games play perfectly fine..it\'s definitely the game...

i know my playstation wouldn\'t play certain dvd movies...i had akira the dvd and it wouldn\'t play it..but i also had ghost in the shell dvd and it played that with no problem..s o i bought the akira vhs tape.....i know we\'re talkin about games but i just thought i\'d throw that tidbit in there about the dvd playback...

PS2 lasers are not the best quality so any inperfections at all on a disc, no matter how small can render them unuseable. I would swap the game if I were you.

Yep. Turns out you guys were right. It was the disc.

I exchanged it today for a clean one and now it plays almost fine. The PS2 is noisy as hell and pauses while loading sometimes, but it\'s playable.

I\'m something like 20% into the storyline. Great game.

Picked up MK: Deception, too. Collector\'s edition with original MK1 is bad ass. My buddy even pulled off a fatality by dumb luck in the new game.
