Buying an LCD Monitor
« on: December 02, 2004, 05:50:21 AM »
I am tired of my 19 inch CRT.  I look at a CRT all day at work and then I get home only to look at my CRT there.  I have heard that the LCD monitors cause less eye strain and are healthier on the eyes in general.

Here is the one I am buying:

LCD Monitor

I can\'t even remember what using a 17 inch monitor feels like when gaming, but I am using DVI so the colors should be much better and the images sharper.

Good Choice, donno if u can get LCDs with a better Pixel Pitch, say around .20  But if there isn\'t such a thing on lcds. Then top notch choice. :)

it\'s a good choice, and if you game it\'ll do you fine with a 12ms response time.

I would also recomend the Dell 2001fp, it\'s a 20" and they\'re always offering pretty good deals on them. Been thinking about getting one myself, or the stylish choice and go Apple 23".

But when it comes to lcd\'s Samsung is just about always a good choice.

i have that exact monitor.  i love it, but don\'t plan to watch darker movies on it.  the black levels just aren\'t black enough.

Ended up getting a 17 inch LG 1720P - Have it now and is there ever a difference.  The LG 1720P\'s now have 12ms response times as well and I am running it with the DVI input.  All for a total of $360 at Best Buy.  I just couldn\'t pass that up and I hear LG makes the Dell LCD\'s.  Is this correct?  Wish I could have gotten a bigger one, but you are talking $700 or so for one with good response time.

I have the Dell 2001FP (20.1") and it\'s a nice monitor.  The response time is pretty good (not as blazing fast as the 12ms on that samsun) but it gets the job done well.  Probably one of the best monitors you can buy for the price and the size considering all the practically monthly deals Dell has on them.  It\'s also nice since you can exchange it anytime in 30 days in case there are any dead or turned off pixels (depends on color of the pixel) and they send you out a new one and pay for the return shipping of your defective one which is really nice.  It also comes with 2 usb 2.0 ports on the side.

Other then the Dell and the Samsung one you chose (which is friggin nice), you might also consider one of the newer Sony LCD monitors which are also incredibly good looking for gaming and especially for general purpose usage though they are, as the Sony brand suggests unless it\'s followed by \'PSP\', fairly pricey.

I noticed with 12ms LCDs no ghosting problems at all. 8ms is just the nail in the coffin. :)

Exactly.  Anything below, i think it was 25, was pretty damn good.  Now it\'s at 12 and soon it will be 8.  Just amazing.

I also noticed my 17 inch LG LCD isn\'t really that much smaller than my 19 inch NEC CRT when it comes to viewable area.  Definitely not 2 inches.

i\'d love to get a nice LCD at home as well.  I got the opposite situation of you Giga, got a nice 19" dell LCD at work and a samsung 19" CRT at home.

Yea i used to hate LCDs, now that they\'re finally bringing out screens with good refresh rates (that gfx cards ask for) and low pixel response times, i may end up getting myself one. Although i was looking towards the widescreen lcds. I\'ll probably just end up with a 17/19inch screen.  Most likely samsung too since i already have a samsung monitor and it rocks.
