Hey guys, I\'m getting a DVD player from my parents for good ol xmas. Now i\'ve 200AUD bucks to choose a player with. I wanted a player that can read dvd-/+ R/RW, MP3 and Divx. i found one that looks good, but i know nothing about the brand.

Well if it\'s really for your parents are you sure they\'ll need divx and mp3 decoding capability?

If you want quality just play it safe with a name brand from Japan.

Pioneer 578 is the current multi-format budget player of choice. Does mp3 but not divx.

I think it\'s for himself.

But yeah, I\'d rather stick with Pioneer than some shit-in-a-box brand that does everything for $10.

Its for me FROM my parents.. I want DIVX playback.. But i\'ve only got 200 to play with.

Read some reviews for it, seems pretty much every person is pretty happy with the unit.

What makes me want to give this a whirl is the massive support this player seems to have.. Plus being able to play pretty much anything i throw in it sounds good...

Looks really good, I got a pretty cheap Centrum DVD player that can play DivX/XviD etc, I\'ve played perhaps 30 DivX movies since I got it, and had problems with one or two of them..
But your model looks a lot better, go for it.

from the dvd player you mention,

its have average audio quality compare to other dvd player and video signal to noise ratio is 60 dB which is average where 70 dB and lower (in negativer form greater > - 70 dB). Some low end dvd players have as greater than -65 dB in video noise for Y Pb and Pr....

if video performance and deinterlacer are important to you, here is some of those you want to see if it "passes".

-blacker than black (and whiter than white)
-video level ( 0 IRE for black and 100 IRE for white)
-YC delay
-frequency response
-image cropping
-chroma bugs...(red and blue streak from y cb cr 4:2:0 upsample to 4:2:2 and 4:4:4)...

....as you can see....Toshiba sd3960 won the budget for its video performance. For only $70, it have great video performance, plays mp3 and wma...

so, i recommend you to get toshiba sd3960 if you value picture quality and save $180 for something else.

DVD players are going to totally change next year. That\'s why they are going for so darn cheap.

I\'m not really paying attention to what you wrote, but black is at 7IRE and what\'s below it is considered super black. It\'s illegal to broadcast, but used for keying.

Above 100 use to be unacceptable. Now that we are in the digital world they are letting us go up to I think 110. Not too sure. I have editors to do that crap.

You can go a little bit higher on Chroma than luminance, but don\'t remember the critical levels.

But in any regard, the player with the widest span of levels is of course better.

Well, i bought the dvd player and it plays everything i throw in it no problems. The Black levels are as dark as my monitors black levels which are very black.. Personally, i don\'t care about all the frequency responses, blacker then black crap. If its as dark as my monitor, its dark enough for me. It also will work with my monitor.. VGA out is groovy.

below 7.5 IRE for blacker than black for US NTSC TV. HDTV is 0 IRE for black and below 0 IRE is blacker than black. Above 100 IRE may clip white level, but not much as long as it in the whiter than white. Same could be said about clipping black too. 110 IRE is a little too much and clips.

a little chroma saturation is by taste, one might prefer accuracy while other prefer a little oversaturation. There is nothing wrong with that, each people have their own taste on it.
