My launch PS2 runs Linux at 1280 x 1024 just fine... :P

(Btw; it seems it isn\'t a native 1080i resolution but an internally upscaled one - only vertical lines are doubled if I stand correct)

I posted in another thread what seven just said.  No way no how can the PS2 render stuff in 1080i @ 60fps in realtime so it\'s being upscaled internally.

It does smooth out the jaggies BUT people are saying a tad of texture detail is lost to free up some processing power.  And it\'s not a full 1080i either.  The sides will be cropped off and it looks like it\'ll be 960i.  We\'ll see how it looks when it gets released here.

1080 is the width, so the sides cut off is still 1080i, just not a 16x9 aspect ratio.

And the upscaling makes more sense, but why don\'t they do that with every game if it\'s just a line doubler?

ANd if that\'s all it is, then I don\'t want it because my TVs line doubler better as hell blow away the one in the PS2.  I can\'t imagine it has a faroudja chip in it.

Not to nitpick, but you\'d be surprised what is technically possible and what not. As I said, the PS2 supports resolutions up to 1280x1024 fine and that isn\'t at 30Hz or something mind you. Of course, such a high resolution will come at a tradeoff (in this case larger framebuffers) - but then again, such high resolutions were never intended given that the majority of the world doesn\'t play on HDTV setups (and certainly not in 1999/2000).

There are examples of games that internally run a very high resolution (Baulders Gate is a great example) but downsample it in favour of better image quality at the intended resolution. It surely will be very interesting which tradeoffs we\'ll see in the future in games.

BTW; One thing about this that I do find very amusing is that the following comment

would have surrounded even the claim that GT4 would do 480p (or any native progressive signal for that matter) - it being the benchmark on PS2 as far as graphics/gameplay go. Even I doubted the news on this when I found out and am quite surprised indeed. Quite incredible how far the PS2 has come since its launch. :D

Like you said there\'s always a tradeoff.  480p is more of a hit on performance so we may see more jaggies than if they programmed it at 480i.

I for one am not impressed that the "benchmark" is just now becoming 480p on the PS2.  With the way they were hyping it\'s launch it should have been doing it since 2000.

the 1080i output isn\'t as stunning as the 720p output we\'ve seen in other non-PS2 titles

720p will always beat 1080i with video games and sports.  It\'s just a heck of a lot better in regards to jaggies.

True but I think they mean to say even when both pictures are still with no moving objects.  It\'s just blowing up a 640x480 resolution and upscaling is an art that takes a lot of CPU muscle to do right, but in all fairness I wanna see it myself before thrashing it even more. :)
