My computer is about ready to take its final crap. It took about 6 attempts to start it up (it freezes at the startup screen), no doubt has viruses up the ass (my mom refuses to get a virus scanner because it costs money and I told her what would happen and I was right), its getting slow as **** and its really pissing me off. I can\'t really post much at school since I have projects in the computer classes that I like..have to start and are due this week and next.

This computer has been getting weird errors and it has trouble running Netscape, Winamp and AIM at the same time (that\'s all I run). If my mom doesn\'t stop acting so cheap and puts money into it, IE virus scanner, additional RAM, etc. (which will cost more than if she let me do it when I noticed the problems), maybe it will work better. This computer is old anyway and we\'ve needed a new one for over 2 years. My mom is in denial about it and told me this morning to just turn it off and back on and it should be fine. I was like "It is not fine if it won\'t start up". Well anyway, if you don\'t see my skinny white ass on here, you know why. And if this computer does crap out, my mom is no doubt not gonna get a new computer for like 6 months.

Something has appeared on my desktop and I asked my mom about it this morning. She tried to pin it on me. I said I changed emails a long time ago and it had nothing to do with anything. She then said "well then, how did that virus get there?" You pretty much can get a virus from browsing the internet, that and I have no firewall. I wouldn\'t know if it is from downloading music from Win MX because I HAVE NO VIRUS SCANNER. If I did have a virus scanner, I would check after each download.

you can get a free full test on your computer at http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/default.asp

you may want to try it, just click new member and go to test anonymously...might help

when you get to the results page, scroll down and if there is a red flag by windows, or a yellow flag, click on windows and it will show you all the spyware, viruses, optional, and required files that are on your computer

you can click on the file, and it will tell you about it...and sometimes you can go to official site, and it will show you how to remove it yourself

seriously, it works really well...

Just download AVG Antivirus.  It may not be the best, but it is free until February 15.

If you really think it\'s just a virus Nod32 is another popular free virus scanner.  It\'s not as well known as AVG but it won all these nerd awards for 100% protection against viruses, and it uses next to no cpu power to run it.

It could also be a hardware problem, let a geek open it up and test out the parts.

uhm...*raises hand slowly*.....i just got this pc...yea i know hell just froze over...but i have a question... keep in mind somebody gave this thing to me and i think it\'s kinda old. it\'s a dell but it seems it\'s slow as s**t...what exactly can i do to speed this thing up? i\'m using the internet via one of those free aol disks you get in the mail (still haven\'t decided what isp i\'m gonna go with)...and it\'s painfully slow..

the person who had it prior to me still has some stuff on it that i can\'t figure out how to get rid of...to speed up my internet connection would i have to get broadband? or do i need more memory for the pc...does it deal with the isp? or a combination of all three...i\'m new at this and if it comes down to the pc just bein slow from the jump, i\'ll just have to get a new one...any answers would be greatly appreciated....

Dialup is so 90\'s.  Come into the 21st century.  Broadband will be the only thing to speed up your internet, but make sure your computer has a network card.  Also, what are the specs on your computer?  Are you running Windows XP?  Kind of hard to give you advice not knowing your processor speed, ram, etc.

Aside from that, download Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3 and scan for spyware.  Do a virus scan as well.  To get rid of programs - go to the control panel and go to add/remove programs and delete the ones you don\'t want.  Lastly, go out and buy this:

I fixed the problem with the boot up. I took out the 128 ram that was in there and replaced it with 256. It is significantly faster. I think eventually, I\'m gonna throw in another 128.
