He was a genius.  A risk taker, a fearless critic of power, and a great writer. He had a nice run. May he rest in peace.

You are missing out big time if you have never read Thompson.  You should at least read "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" which is his most famous, but also shortest and most accessible book.  It is also one of funniest pieces of writing in the english language.
