Router functions dropped from PS3
« Reply #15 on: July 11, 2005, 02:22:28 PM »
I don\'t mind the additional cost if the feature in question is useful.

There\'s also a question of "Will consumers reap the price benefits of losing router functions or is it all for Sony?" ...

Of course, I don\'t need a router.. and if I did then the PS3 wouldn\'t be able to handle all of my connections. (3 PC\'s and a cable modem)

Given that the PS3 supports only broadband (?) you\'d think that the majority of users already have their hardware.. so I don\'t see too many tear-stained eyes over this loss..

On the controllers: They were sued for not getting the license up front to use Rumble technology. Nintendo was the only one who did that. Now all three companies went the legitimate way and can legally (or, without repercussions) feature force feedback controllers.

On the router: That\'s good to hear. I didn\'t know it was supposed to double as a router in the first place. Whatever extras it can do, I won\'t use. I\'ll play DVDs elsewhere, HD or not. Sony makes shit hardware and I don\'t want to break it through normal use and have to buy another one. The least I can use it, the better. That\'s how I treat my (second) PS2. DVDs on the Xbox, please.

I\'ve used the DVD Player function on my PS2 hundreds of times and I never had any problems with it.

If they can bring the price down by at least $50 they would be in much better shape.

As for scaling down the specs of the cell - the stupidest idea ive ever heard.

On the controller design: I thought the company that sued sony was suing them for the technology used in the controller not the design itself.

If thats the case then i see no reason for the design of the new controller. Dont get me wrong, im all about change at some points but the new controller just looks far too uncomfortable. Perhaps its really small and easier to use than expected (due to japanese gamers).

Naw but I expect other things to get dropped.

It will never happen! PS3 will be released with superior hardware compared to XBox360, now Sony want the most powerful piece of hardware, and they have at least 6 months more over the main competitor to do it!

i don\'t see them scaling down the cell at all....that would be absurd. i remember them sayin that ps2 was supposed to have all kinds of capabilities, but by the time it\'s fully realized, it\'s time for the next jump in console evolution. sony shouldn\'t try to make each system have EVERYTHING in it. in the long run it\'s a waste of time. just give it features that everybody will most likely use...

Yep!  The hardware is finalized, Cell and RSX are finalized ! ...""and Sony now expects that users will continue to use their existing router hardware, which is becoming more commonplace in households with broadband internet connections.""
