Graphics Card Question
« on: December 27, 2005, 12:36:29 PM »
A friend helped me build a computer with a PCI-e motherboard. He gave me this video card: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=6949859&type=product&id=1099382222061 .

Do you guys think it would be worth going out and getting a second one of those for my motherboard? or are prices going to drop any time soon? i usually plan on using videocards for 4 years and THEN upgrading to the most recent (or second most recent) card, so upgrading now isnt really an option. Just curious if its worth getting the second card or just sticking with one and not spending 250 dollars for something thats not worth it.

edit: that might not be the right one..not sure cuz theres a few of them. Its a geforce 6600 GT, PCI-E x16, 128MB

$ 224 for a 6600GT !?

For less than that you can get a 6800GS or even a 6800GT.

Of course, that means no Sli unless you manage to sell that 6600GT you have now, for about the same price.

I suggest you sell that 6600GT and buy this EVGA 7800GT for $ 299

one 7800gt kills two 6600gt\'s in SLi (EDIT: ok, it dosen\'t kill in EVERY benchmark, but pound for pound it is the much better buy.)

look through the benchmarks and you will see, the 6600gt is in several of these (at the ver bottom usually), if it\'s not in some graphs it\'s because it doesn\'t even show up on the radar.

oh, and if you are going to sell your own computer, you can get more for it by selling it piece by piece on ebay.  Processor w/ fan, Motherboard, video card... etc.

i dont get what the big deal is about having 2 video cards than. Kind of disappointing..there would never be a point to get 2 cards that cost cheaper than a better card seperately, but together probably cost more than a higher end card and still be worse.

edit: My brother showed me a site a while ago..cant remember where i saw it..but i thought i saw it say the 6600 had a 50% increase with the second video card.

so do you have an AGP 6600gt?  If so they are going for more on ebay than PCI-e 6600gts.  Selling your two cards and throwing in 50 bucks or so should do the trick to land a 7800gt.

Worst case get a 6800gs ($200), it falls between the 6800gt and a 6800 ultra (when overclocked).

It\'s as worth it to get 2 video cards as it is to buy an expensive CPU: you get what you pay for.

2x6600GT = roughly 6800GT performance, little higher/lower depending on the benchmark.

At the time of release, 2x6600GT cost about the same price as the 6800GT. ($400)

SLI has 2 major selling points:

A. Incremental SLI. Buy $200 6600GT, have fun. Buy second 6600GT, now $~100~, a year later. Have more fun.

B. Brute force. Nothing can touch 2 7800GTX\'s in SLI right now. Nothing. It\'s also about $1,000.

What\'s the deal with two graphics cards?  You can daisy chain them together for better power on a single monitor?
