Wii to be profitable upon release
« on: September 15, 2006, 07:33:36 AM »
Quote
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Nintendo Co. Ltd.\'s (7974.OS) new Wii game console and related software will be profitable to the company once sales begin in the United States in November, the president of Nintendo of America said on Thursday.

"We will make a profit on the entire Wii proposition out of the box -- hardware and software," Reggie Fils-Aime told Reuters in an interview.

"That really is a very different philosophy versus our competitors. We are a company that competes only in the interactive entertainment space so we have to make a profit on every thing we do."

At $250, the Wii console will face stiff competition against Microsoft Corp.\'s (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) already-available Xbox 360 and Sony Corp.\'s (6758.T) PlayStation 3, which will debut on November 17 in North America at two price levels, $499 and $599.

i wonder what would have happened if sony released the ps2 slim as PS3 and included the tilt controller for 250$, claiming it was the new thing.

They would have included a proprietary media format as well. So it would have cost $599. Or, wait...

Also, the dollar sign comes before the number smart ass.

It\'s still irrelevant. I was talking about how Sony added some graphics and a blu ray drive to a PS2 and called it a system. Remember your original (inane) point? That\'s business. Progression in the industry is common and nothing new. What is new is the direction Nintendo is taking it with Wii.

even the most hardened sony critic can\'t say the graphical ability leap between the PS2 and PS3 isn\'t huge.

nintendo is blatantly notorious for small stepping the industry to maximize sales/profits.  hi gameboy!

my comment is quite important when you consider nintendo\'s utter reliance on proprietary media formats.  didn\'t they charge like 20$ for every N64 cart?

nintendo should go the way of sega.

The leap from the PS2 graphically is pretty impressive. From Xbox, it\'s only somewhat impressive if you have an HDTV.

At least, that\'s my opinion.

Nintendo lost a lot of third party support with N64\'s cartridges.

And if Nintendo went the way of Sega, at least they\'d still be making their good games. Wouldn\'t be the end of the world.

Nintendo is far more important than Microsoft or Sony to the gaming industry. If one or both of them disappeared, third parties would still exist. But if Nintendo was gone completely, that would be a huge blow to innovation and quality in the industry.

well, even i can freely admit that nintendo has the best in house development.

innovation and quality are questionable by many standards, tho.

mario and link are still doing the same things

i say the industry is crippled by gamer\'s expectations.
too many devs use focus groups to mold games to the lowest common denominator.

....and cost.
50$ a game is bullshit.
i think i\'ve bought less than 5 titles for retail this year.
the rest i wait a few months and pick up on ebay/used

My chief dissapointment in Nintendo is that even though the tecnology is new, or at least new to videogames, their uses have yet to be maximized.  So far, much of what we\'ve seen from the Wii is stuff the Eyetoy was doing last generation just greatly expanded upon.  The same goes for the DS where touch gaming is something that isn\'t new when you look at the Palm community, but it is something I\'d expect a Nintendo first party to not only introduce, but fully utilize in one of its own games and that isn\'t a reality at this time.

Look at the N64 controller - definitely something that was new with an analog stick and trigger like buttons (Z) and the first game that utilized it greatly was Mario 64 and I\'m just not seeing that type of innovation and experimentation with the Wii or the DS as yet.  It\'s like mm said, Mario is Mario and Zelda is Zelda, but how each have played hasn\'t changed since OoT and Mario 64 respectively - though they have certainly made far too many guest appearances throughout the years. ;)

I don\'t know, maybe the magic of Nintendo IP\'s has dwindled for me over the years.  I grew up, they didn\'t...
Don\'t you ever touch my cape.

I agree. Like the DS, Wii shows the potential to be really exciting, but except for Wii Sports and Excitetruck, I don\'t see it being put into effect in a meaningful way.

Hopefully the future will bring continued creativity and not just a dirge or racing games and FPSs.
