360 HD-DVD quality
« on: March 07, 2007, 09:01:26 PM »
I was just wondering what the picture quality was like for HD-DVD\'s. Theres no way to test it out unless i buy it and return it if i dont like it..but im not a fan of that.

anyway, in relation to other hd channels how is it? Like HBO-HD (which is good but not amazing) or like sports games? or is it like the discovery channel (which is awesome/the best)

I know, mm specifically, that you dont like the movie selection but im not as big of a stickler in that regard, so im more wondering about quality than quantity..already have a list of a few movies id buy, and im not an avid movie-watcher so i dont need a library.

I got some b-day money to spend..

the quality is very impressive for what little there is to watch.  HD-DVD has very, very few titles that aren\'t available on Blu-Ray also.

HBO-HD is 1080i and compressed via your cable box.  i\'d say HD-DVD definitely looks better, especially at 1080P over VGA.

i would never have bought the HD-DVD if i didn\'t have giftcards to use, and i would seriously recommend putting your b-day money towards a PS3 if you already have a 360.

I rather that you spend your $200 on something else than on a HD-DVD for 360 because 360 doesn\'t have the HDMI connection and you only get HD Video via analog connection...

The audio is another problem as you won\'t be able to hear it in it lossless and uncompressed quality because of no HDMI connection...

but if you can overlook that, than go for it...

You should do as mm said and put that money toward a PS3.

And as for movies,  quality vs quanity?

Bluray exclusive studios
- 20th Century Fox
- Sony Pictures
- MGM
- Beuna Vista
- Disney
- LionsGate
- Columbia

HD-DVD exclusive studios
- Univeral Pictures

Quanity wins here, imo

Now that list isn\'t expected to change either way for at least another year so make your choice wisely.  I consider it a neighborly duty to also tell you Bluray is winning the format war right now by 2-1...so buying into HD-DVD would be buying into the losing side

you are such a fucking fanboy. did you even read what he asked? he specifically asked about quality not quantity. I recently bought the hddvd addon and I gotta say it is awesome. Just read some of the reviews, cause they all tell you the quality is at least as good if not better than the current standalone hddvd players which are much more expensive. I must admit I haven\'t seen blu ray in action yet, so I can\'t comment on whether or not one is better over the other.

He\'s right though, it seems right now that Blu-Ray has the upper hand (again).

However if you have money to spend on nothing else it\'s a cheap way to get some HD stuff. And quality wise it\'s certainly holding its own. But as far as movie selection goes, I\'m not sure I\'d bet on HD-DVD in the long run.

Yeah I think Sony is winning the marketing battle. You just don\'t hear about HD-DVD, despite it having the more appropriate name.

Just like how you don\'t hear as much about XM Satellite Radio compared to Sirius, despite the more appropriate name...

Just got an email from Microsoft. Looks like they\'re giving away a high def episode of South Park if you buy the HD-DVD add-on. So they\'re still wheelin and dealin a little bit.

With the low cost of the add-on, I could see this promotion definitely moving a few more players.

From March 6–20, 2007, download the "Good Times with Weapons" episode only at Xbox Live® Marketplace. After March 20, go to Best Buy and get the episode on a free HD DVD with your Xbox 360™ console or Xbox 360 HD DVD player purchase!

well, you don\'t need the HD-DVD to download and view the episode.

southpark isn\'t a good source for HD viewing as it looked good, but it\'s still animated paper cutouts.

Yeah that was my first thought, but after I read through the ad, my next thought was "It\'s not too much, maybe I should get the add-on" before I reminded myself that it doesn\'t have the support I think it needs to become a viable format/investment.

But if I considered it, I\'m sure others will, too.
